Oil Consumption: Why It Happens & How to Fix

Hello everyone,
What made me a little suspicious was that I actually had to top up the oil in my A.J.M. Golf recently, after my car kindly alerted me to it .
'Before my current car, I only drove older VWs (the youngest was 10 years old), all gasoline-powered, and I never had to add any oil, even with the same driving conditions.'
Is it due to the diesel engine, or are there other reasons behind this?
