Hello everyone!

I am interested in the average expected lifespan of exhaust gas turbochargers that are subjected to very high thermal and mechanical loads in modern TDIs.
Therefore, I am starting a small survey here in the forum, where you can share your experiences.
Please only post if you have already had a turbocharger failure icon_idea.gif

Please support me generously so that the survey provides reasonably representative results. Thank you icon_biggrin.gif

If you don't mind, I would appreciate it if you could provide the MKB and, if known, the cause of the failure/defect. icon_smile.gif

In this context, information about the driving profile would also be helpful, for example, in the form:

xx% City, xx% Country Road, xx% Highway, Average Consumption x.x l/100km

Based on the driving distances and the average fuel consumption, I am able to form a good understanding of how the engine is performing.

Thank you for your posts icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif

1. 12/998 ALH: Mileage 72,000km. Engine damage. Reason: Too thin oil from the workshop was filled in (0W-40), the turbo forced oil into the engine, which burned in the exhaust system... => Defect. icon_sad.gif

2. 03/00 ALH: Ran well, over 160,000km.

Hi Alex,

So far, we have been spared from "real" TDIs, but we haven't driven them for very long yet.

My VTG at the AFN was sometimes experiencing more wear than the small membrane container, particularly around 20,000 km.
At VW, I would definitely have gotten a new supercharger - of course, the original part with the small can, etc. etc.
A larger container has also solved the problem, for a fraction of the cost icon_cool.gif
Whether you consider this to be a case of damage caused by the charging process, that is up to you. . .

Additionally, I suggest that you mark the thread as important (-> edit), which will keep it at the top until you mark it as normal again icon_wink.gif
Gruß Ulf

More than 300,000 km on the Audi 80 with no problems.

Recently, I've been driving a lot of short distances/city driving!

Greetings

11/95 Audi 80 Cabrio B4
Mileage: 1Z with over 240,000 km

approximately 60% highway, 20% rural roads, 20% urban traffic.
ca. 6,0 l/100km Average fuel consumption

The turbocharger is the first one, and as far as I can tell, it's still 100% functional!

Year: 2000, AMF (1.4 TDI), 30 ABx30 LAx40, City use, average consumption of approximately 5 L.
Chip failure at 22,000 km. Out of the approximately 15,000 km of country roads, only those sections on mountain passes were driven under full load.
The pump had pushed so much oil through the shaft at around 102,000 km that the engine switched to emergency mode.

Greetings

Olaf
