Hello,

DTherefore, my question is:
Is there a way to verschandeln the inside of the intake manifold without removing it? You could potentially use a bottle brush inserted through the EGR flange, but before I risk scratching or damaging anything, I thought I'd better ask the experts.
Okay, and where should the EGR valve be located, on the intake manifold side or the exhaust manifold side?
Vehicle:
Audi A6 2.5 TDI; manufactured in 1994.

Thank you for the tips.
Best regards, Burki.

The question is how much cleaning is needed, or how quickly you want it cleaned. Some people with "faulty" EGR systems have reported cleaning effects due to the oil that is forced through the intercooler by the turbocharger. However, they drove several tens of thousands of kilometers in this mode. And I don't know what condition the exhaust manifold was in afterwards.

I would choose a combination of chemical and mechanical cleaning methods (brake cleaner / alcohol / petroleum) and a brush (but not too abrasive). A bottle brush is probably too soft, because the grime is quite thick.
Under no circumstances would I let it burn out completely, as the manifold could warp.

However, the question is how much benefit it actually provides. Some people have cleaned their catalytic converters and didn't notice any difference afterward. Is it really necessary?

Hi Holger, I can only guess what the inside looks like, but after almost 200,000 km, I imagine it's pretty dark...
But if the turbocharger oil also cleans it, I'll try next time to see if I can remove the worst of the buildup by accessing it through the EGR flange. Then I can just 'drive it clean.'
But what do you mean by 'Under no circumstances would I scrap it, as the manifold could become warped'? icon_confused.gif Scrap metal recycling will definitely give it a new form.

Best regards, Burkhard.

Hi,

*grin*

Apparently, Rainer's word filter kicked in... "burning" was automatically replaced with "incinerating" - which, in this case, is probably quite appropriate.

Best regards,

January.

Hehe, well, the people who want to burn out their exhaust silencer are probably now failing because of the 4 questions... actually, we could probably remove that word now, even though it's quite funny... icon_razz.gif

Hmm, exhaust tip and burning: A classmate of mine pours wax into the exhaust pipe to get a powerful sound. *g*

Best regards, WarLord.

Hi,

Try using a small mirror, like the dentists around the corner, to take a look. If it's heavily soiled, just remove it; it will only cost you one extra gasket and some labor (6 screws). That way, you can be sure that it gets verschandeln and the dirt doesn't spread towards the valves.

Best regards, Ecki.
