hello,

I'm new here! Here are some information about my child who is struggling:

I bought a Caddy 1. One of the previous owners had installed a Golf 2 turbodiesel engine (JR 1.6 with 69PS).
He didn't run perfectly from the beginning. He also repeatedly refused to start.
then he was tied to another car and towed, when towing, he also immediately came to the coupling when releasing.

If I start it when it's warm, I usually need to try twice. Sometimes, however, it just doesn't work at all.
Finally, he also didn't want to [ACTION] even when he had sufficient pre-heating time.

What could be the cause? I'm a pretty new diesel engine user. But, as far as I know, there's nothing wrong with the engine itself.
I checked the light bulbs, they seem to be okay.
If I disconnect the diesel lines to the fuel injectors, will all 4 diesels start?

A garage (a rather shady one) measured the compression, and told me the following values: 8.5/10.5/19 bar. The 4th cylinder was not measured, but they immediately wanted to replace the cylinder head and new piston rings, etc. All in all, a repair costing more than 1000 euros!!!

I think they were just trying to make a quick buck. Because the diesel engine still runs (if it feels like it), and it definitely goes through, even when being towed! So, the values can't be that bad. If the compression values are that low, no diesel engine in the world can run like that, right?

I would be very grateful for contributions that are truly helpful!

Hm, so the compression values are already beyond good and bad. I would like to have them checked again at another workshop.

Best regards, WarLord

If you can't interpret the compression values, that's your personal misfortune.
Either you believe it, then you must investigate what is leaking: valves or piston rings.
If you don't believe it, you'll just have to get it measured somewhere else.

But hasn't Warlord also said so? So, what do you want?
