Hello everyone,

It's a 20J GTI Golf, specifically an AFN 3-door model.
Recently, I've been having trouble shifting into the third and fourth gears. I could only force the gears into place with a lot of resistance. Often, even when I had properly disengaged the clutch, the gears would still grind when shifting.
The expert who examined the problem diagnosed worn synchronizing rings.

Does anyone know this problem?

Is it better to get an old transmission with low mileage from a scrapyard, and if so, which one???, or should you have new synchronizer rings installed? What is cheaper, or what makes more sense?

What do the rings actually do in the transmission, since I don't have any technical knowledge.

I would be very grateful for a few tips!

Best regards,

Tobi.

What do synchronous rings do?

They synchronize icon_wink.gif, specifically the rotational speeds between the shaft and the desired gear. The game only starts when they are all the same.

Have you already lubricated the shaft on the gearbox, the part where the cable connections attach? For my gearbox, this is absolutely essential; otherwise, it will shift very poorly.

Above all, the sliding part that moves within this pliers should be well-lubricated.

If the parts have too much play, it will become inaccurate and jerky.

Maybe I should change the transmission oil (Castrol TAF-X) and possibly add some lubricant (SX 6000 or a tube of Liqui Moly "Shift-Softener").

It's all worth a try, and it's always cheaper than a new transmission!

Thank you, Dieselmartin.

I'll try using lubricants; hopefully, that will solve the problem.

A technician just mentioned that it might be a transmission from a Passat 35i, and that the problem with the synchronizer rings is a known and common issue with that type of transmission.
Has anyone ever experienced this type of damage before, and if so, how did it manifest itself?

"away" ???

Well, hopefully things will get better. But a Golf 4 still shifts better than your transmission.

"from the Passat 35i"

You could also say that the Passat already had the Golf 3 transmission icon_smile.gif.

The series is called "02A" - these are the cable-operated gearboxes from the Golf 3 TDI and VR6 (and also GTI 16V).

"Once, a synchronizer ring broke in my car (Audi 80, 1Z). As a result, I couldn't engage some of the gears, including reverse. It wasn't fun when I was trying to park. However, the larger pieces then fell down into the gearbox, and I was able to drive without any problems, although it was like driving with a car that has no synchronizers." Transmission.
The synchronizer ring is made of brass, and the fine shavings have completely worn out all the bearings in the transmission. After a collision, I had to replace the transmission.

Best regards.

@BesidesMom

Well, I've never heard or read anything about the transmissions frequently breaking on the 35i. Our old 35i TDI probably had the best transmission/shift cable combination I've ever driven. Such a buttery-smooth and precise transmission. *sighs dreamily*

Best regards, WarLord.

@ Marco

The inscription was also, of course, placed in the engine compartment!!! (honestly)

But now, the "Maya the Bee" (helmet) is black and matte again, and I actually prefer riding without it because you can shift gears faster. The weight of the pendulum swings too much, even when the movement is already established.
