Post21-09-2004, 15:22    Subject: Water Pump Replacement: Should You Replace It? Quote

hello,
I'm slowly approaching the 90,000 km mark, and I've already found an independent workshop that will do the timing belt replacement for a reasonable price.
I recently read online that there can be problems or leaks with the water pump during or shortly after replacement.

Should I also have the water pump replaced preventatively (+50)?

Who did this? / Who didn't do this?

Thank you & best regards from Vienna!

I also have a G IV AHF 04/98, and according to Volkswagen, the timing belt needs to be replaced every 60,000 km.

Okay, so my first service at 60,000 km was without a water pump replacement, and the second one (with a reinforced belt) included it.
This time, at 150,000 km, including the water pump replacement.

Hello!
I can only repeat it: get rid of the water pump! Don't do it; the risk to your engine is too high! The water pump essentially consists of a ball bearing and an impeller. The ball bearing faces the same problems due to the new, tighter belt as the bearings in the tensioner pulleys, and you replace those, don't you? Just recently, I had another customer vehicle (okay, it was an Opel 2.0 OHC, but the water pump is driven by the timing belt, just like on a TDI) where the Opel dealership didn't replace the water pump during the first timing belt replacement. About 50,000 km later, the water pump seized, and the timing belt broke. However, it had an advantage over a TDI: as long as the engine speed is below 3000 rpm, the valves don't even come close to the pistons...
So, don't skimp on the wrong thing. The extra cost is only minimal, and you'll have to drain some of the broth anyway, as the balancing tank would be quite cumbersome.

Best regards,

Dominique.

If the water pump is driven by the timing chain, then get rid of it. What's the point if you have to start all over again after 20,000 km or 30,000 km?

From my own experience, I can tell you that the water pump replacement in my 96kW PD engine didn't last 90,000 km. Fortunately, it wasn't the bearing, but 'only' the impeller that failed. The replacement water pump cost me less than 50 euros. That small amount of money doesn't make a big difference.

same here.

When dealing with a TDI engine of this age, it's always best to replace the fuel pump as well.

The extra charge is disproportionate to the labor costs for a belt replacement.
Regarding the Opel mentioned earlier, it's still possible to achieve that within a half-hour timeframe. However, with the heavily modified TDI engine, it takes an incredibly long and frustrating amount of time.

Thank you for your numerous responses!
I'll then invest another $50 into a new VPN service.

Which bearing should I have replaced?
My mechanic didn't mention that!

The water pump replacement, including the screws (which need to be replaced), and the belt, will cost me €300.

Did you also have the bearings replaced? (If so, which ones?)

hi yankee

Replacing bearings on the WAPU (water pump unit) doesn't make sense. The pressed-on pulley or the pressed-on impeller would have to be removed, and that's where the problem likely starts.
You can get this part from VW as an exchange item. This means you return your old part and take a new one in its place. With a little ingenuity, you could also take the new part with you and deliver the old one later.

Definitely!

I bought a timing belt kit from VW for my car (due to lack of time), and it included the tensioner pulley, idler pulley, timing belt, and various stretch bolts.

Which types of medical devices are driven by a vacuum pump via a rotary joint?
It's a great construction icon_confused.gif.

On my 1Z, I didn't replace the water pump, as it's only connected to the timing belt and is very easily accessible.

It's a really great construction icon_confused.gif.

For example, in my AHF (application for housing).

What did you pay for it?

Approximately 200 penguins, but I think that included the Humboldt penguin exhibit. I need to check more closely...
