If I enter this(10. Include typical topics from spoiler, wide tire, and sports exhaust forums in this community.). If I happen to post in a thread about 'fat lips,' please delete the thread. We only have a very small rear spoiler. icon_wink.gif

We are trying to teach a diesel engine how to race, and I want to provide informative updates about our activities. I'll start at the beginning of the year and will gradually post new reports.

As I said, if it's not desired -> delete it! Please share your opinions.

Here's the race report from May 22nd, 2004:

On May 22nd, we ran our first GLP (Gas Liquefied Petroleum) fueled event in 2004. After the turbocharger failed on May 8th during the Castrol-Haugg-Cup (at that time, we still didn't have the 'N' sticker on the rear hatch icon_wink.gif), we had taken several measures to prevent this from happening again. Although the cause of the failure could not be clarified 100%, we are confident that we have addressed this weak point.

http://www.mungo-racing.de/gallery/albums/1-Lauf-CHC-2004/IMG2205040077.jpg

The test run went perfectly smoothly, and compared to 2003, we were able to improve lap times by approximately 30 seconds. The engine still has some reserves that we haven't yet fully exploited. In combination with new performance maps and a new braking system, we expect to be able to gain another 30 seconds throughout the season.

Unfortunately, the organizer experienced problems with the timing system. Some participants protested against the times, and the results need to be recalculated. Before the deadline for protests expired, we were in 12th place out of approximately 100 participants. The new results are unfortunately not yet available.

http://www.mungo-racing.de/gallery/albums/1-Lauf-CHC-2004/IMG2205040076.jpg

The next race is the Castrol-Haugg-Cup on June 10th, as part of the supporting program for the international 24-hour race at the Nürburgring. This event is a highlight of the season for the entire team, as we will be racing in front of an audience of approximately 200,000 spectators. The race report will follow later, as we won't be leaving the Eifel region until June 14th.

We would like to thank Walter Hornung (www.motor-sport-foto.de) for the excellent photos.

Regards,
Stefan.

Hi Stefan,

Great car. I don't think this thread falls into the 'showy' category, so please continue as you are.
Do you have any more pictures or information about the technical details of the G3? I think that would be interesting to many people here (including me). Is the cooler you can see on the lower front lip a large intercooler? If so, what is its real-world benefit, and how does the larger volume affect the boost curve?

Hi,

Interesting!

It would be nice to read a little bit about the machine used, as much as you can share without revealing your racing secrets.

Best regards,

January.

I would also appreciate further reports. Perhaps with the same level of detail as you shared within the TDI community. For many here, it would certainly be interesting to learn about the modifications that have been tried, along with their successes and failures.

Regards,
Sure.

Here is the translation of the text from German to English:

"Guste" means "gust" in English. It can also be used as a verb, meaning "to gust."

Sure, here's the translation:

"Just a slightly off-topic question:"
Why are you driving with alloy wheels?

Does it have any specific advantages over Stalix, or was it just because they happened to have some on hand?

As a purist, I would be interested in knowing the significance of any potential performance advantages in everyday use...

Can this be stated so generally? I once weighed my 16-inch winter tires on steel rims and the 16-inch original VW alloy wheels. The alloy wheels came out worse; they were slightly heavier, even though they had summer tires mounted on them. I think that to give the aluminum the stability of steel, more aluminum is needed. This probably only applies to normal alloy wheels; I don't want to say anything about special ones. I just remember my own experience. I need to see if I wrote this down somewhere; I no longer have the numbers in my head. It's easy to weigh a summer tire right now, but I would have to remove the valve from the rim of the winter tires at the moment...

Just like Matthias, I don't believe that was "spontaneous."

To achieve sufficient stability, aluminum profiles require significantly more wall thickness than steel profiles, which tends to offset the effect of the lower density .

Ultimately, it's difficult to estimate the net result; we would need to weigh commercially available aluminum and steel rims of the same size.

The rims used in racing are somewhat different from those used on the street (including their weight).

For vehicles of category N, the rims used must also be homologated. To check this, I would need to review the vehicle's homologation certificate. It is possible that no steel rims are homologated for the specified width (which I suspect is the case).

The rims I used in racing (on closed courses) were significantly lighter than the street-legal rims (whether aluminum or steel). Unfortunately, these rims did not have a road approval... for obvious reasons. There was no material testing report available.

Yes, I believe so.
"It would be really interesting to compare the differences between standard rims. I'm willing to do a comparison sometime soon, using a VW with 16-inch steel rims and another with 16-inch Montreal II rims, one with winter tires and one with summer tires."

Just for informational purposes!

Hello,

Thank you very much for your feedback! icon_biggrin.gif

Do you have any more pictures or information about the technical details of the G3? I think that would be interesting to many people here (including me). Is the cooler that can be seen on the lower front lip a large radiator? If so, what is its real-world benefit, and how does the larger volume affect the boost curve. There are plenty of pictures on our website, for example, from our beginnings last year, the 'major' overhaul in winter, and from another racing team that we support with parts and expertise.

Yes, the cooler is the intercooler. Unfortunately, I cannot answer your detailed questions because I am just starting to understand how a diesel engine works. icon_rolleyes.gif Mathias Grundler built the engine for us. Let me list what has been changed: The base is an AFN engine, bored out to 2.0L, with a GT17 turbocharger, larger injectors, a modified cylinder head (now I'm not even sure if the camshaft was also modified icon_redface.gif), a large intercooler, and of course, the software.

Why are you using alloy wheels? Do they have specific advantages over steel rims, or is it just 'because they were available'?The rims in the photos were simply available and are actually heavier than steel rims. However, we've since bought a few sets of ATS-CUP rims (thanks to eBay), which are significantly lighter than the ones pictured. I estimate that these are about as heavy as the steel rims. The reason for using them right now is purely aesthetic, as there are no other disadvantages. Next year, we will upgrade to 18' wheels, and there will be lightweight options available then.

'What Bertil wrote is completely correct. There are rims specifically designed for motorsports that are extremely light but also extremely expensive. This year we participated in two racing series simultaneously. The GLP requires that all modifications be registered, which means you can't use those types of rims.'

...and because you are all craving new reports icon_wink.gif, here is the next one directly:

Castrol-Haugg Cup 10.06.2004

On June 10th, we had the honor of opening the 32nd International ADAC Zurich 24 Hours Race in front of 220,000 spectators. The Castrol-Haugg-Cup was part of the supporting program for what is considered the world's largest motorsport event.

On Wednesday, we had the opportunity to present our vehicle to the fans alongside many other participants of the weekend during the Corso. Some people were surprised about what's possible with a diesel in acceleration tests, and one overly enthusiastic 'reporter' who held his microphone directly against our exhaust pipe managed to melt it into a blob of hot-formed plastic... (We still have a few issues with the exhaust temperature. icon_rolleyes.gif icon_redface.gif)

http://www.mungo-racing.de/gallery/albums/24h_2004/P1010061.sized.jpg

On Thursday morning, with 150 teams participating, we tackled the nearly 24km course consisting of a combination of the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife and the short connection to the Grand Prix circuit. After the latest modifications, the Mungo-Golf ran perfectly without any issues. Frank skillfully completed his laps and put the Golf in a good starting position.

http://www.mungo-racing.de/gallery/albums/24h_2004/IMG_0491.sized.jpg

This race was the only one of the weekend that wasn't affected by rain, so we were able to avoid any extra pit stops. The single pit stop for a driver change went smoothly thanks to many friends of the team, and Stefan was then able to push forward aggressively.

He took that literally and explored the very last possibility.
http://www.mungo-racing.de/gallery/albums/24h_2004/P1010062.sized.jpg

Experts will recognize that we are here at the Aremberg curve, which is where Frank had his 'Aremberg greeting' during a training session for the first race of the season in the rain. This greeting is now visible on the left fender, and the incident also bent the tie rod after a rough ride through the gravel bed.

We were able to fully exploit the potential of our Golf TDI and achieved a very good 3rd place in our class for vehicles with an engine displacement of up to 3.0 liters. The next race will be held on July 3rd at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife, starting at 1:00 PM. On the same day, we will also participate in the GLP event, which starts at 9:30 AM.

Please provide the German text you would like me to translate into English. I will then give you only the translation, without any explanations.

GLP 19.06.2004

Barely back from the Eifel region, we had to pack our bags again. MSG Solingen had invited us to the 3rd GLP in 2004. A total of 96 teams participated, despite challenging conditions – the Eifel region showed its most beautiful side: sunshine, heavy rain, and hail showers alternated.

On Friday evening, before the race, we still tweaked the engine control maps. This should impress our competitors and make them take notice during the competition.

http://www.mungo-racing.de/gallery/albums/Photos-von-der-GLP-am-19-06-2004/IMG2205040076.jpg

In the first half of the race, the track was completely wet. Because racing slicks are mandatory in the GLP, we had significant problems translating the engine's power into forward motion. Frank struggled with wheelspin when accelerating out of corners in fourth gear. So, we took it easy and gradually pushed the Golf around the track.

http://www.mungo-racing.de/gallery/albums/Photos-von-der-GLP-am-19-06-2004/IMG1906040110.jpg

PlSure, here's the translation:

http://www.mungo-racing.de/gallery/albums/Photos-von-der-GLP-am-19-06-2004/IMG1906040192.jpg

We would like to thank Walter Hornung from www.motor-sport-foto.de for the photos used in this class.

For the next race, we will completely overhaul our timing system. This should enable us to finish in the top 10 in one of the upcoming races.

Regards,
Stefan.

As long as the tire size is the same, the difference should be roughly equivalent to the weight difference between the rims... or are winter tires generally heavier than summer tires (or vice versa)?
I'm already curious about your results icon_biggrin.gif.

So, I went down to the basement with the scale... Since we have a few vehicles from the Volkswagen Group, I had the idea of not removing the tires from the car for measurement purposes.
Okay, please provide the text you would like me to translate from German to English. I will only provide the translation.
VW Avus II aluminum rims with Continental Eco Contact tires, size 195/65/R15. Weight: 15.7 kg.
VW steel rim, 15 inches, also suitable for Golf, with Pirelli P6000 tires, size 195/65 R15, weight 13.6 kg.
VW Alu Santa Monica with Dunlop SP (??) 225/45/R17 - 21.8 kg.

Okay, everything was measured and averaged using the person scale, which probably came from Aldi. I weighed each tire three times consecutively, and then I ran out of time. The deviations were between +/- 0.1 kg, which is the minimum resolution of the device. What I mean is that these are not reference values, but rather a rough assessment of the tires from my basement. It would be interesting to know whether a Pirelli tire weighs the same as a Conti tire. Moreover, it's probably better to weigh the bare rims...but I'm not removing any tires for that icon_biggrin.gif. Otherwise, regarding the measurements: All tires were clean...I cleaned those annoying Avus with a toothbrush (don't laugh, they have such tiny gaps). The steel rims were also nicely shiny black, and the Santa Monicas, which I still haven't sold, are a bit dusty. All the mounted tires had approximately the same remaining tread depth.

Hmm, and in some of the photos, normal license plates are visible.

So, I assume that the car also has road approval and that all the modifications are registered?

How does that fit together with the ongoing development of the car, such as...?

Have you, as a precaution, registered something like "Euro 0" and 300 horsepower, allowing you to modify the engine without being considered "illegal" when driving on public roads?

*cough*... Could it be that the scale isn't very accurate?

My 235/40/18 (8Jx18) S4 Avus rims with ContiSportContact2 tires weigh 17.9 kg each.

The rim weighs 13 kg without the tire, and the tire weighs 4.9 kg.
