Hello,
I need to replace the timing belt on my Passat soon (ATJ engine, 180,000 km). Thanks to the many helpful tips from this forum, I think I can manage it. Of course, I'll also be replacing the water pump at the same time.
Now, my question is:
Is it worthwhile to replace the hydraulic clamping device as well? As far as I know, there is no regulation from Volkswagen that requires replacing the clamping device. Has anyone here had any (negative) experiences with this?
Greetings.
Rupert.

In 90% of cases, the original vibration damper remains installed.
He hasn't caused any problems so far, and I don't recall having any issues with him.
Sometimes, a faulty expansion joint can be the cause of engine damage!
He only replaces them if they leak a little oil at the top where they connect to the simmering pot; it's practically a sign of leakage.
If it's dry, you can leave him inside without worry!
If this is already the second belt replacement, then I would recommend replacing it entirely. B.Eng (FH) u. KFZ Meister

Hello Steffarn,
Given the extremely limited response to my question, I assume that the tensioning device is indeed quite straightforward and presents no problems.
I'll probably leave it in there unless the oil starts leaking out.
Thank you and best regards.
Rupert.
