Hello,

4 months ago, I received my Golf 5 Comfortline. It is equipped with the standard VW steering wheel icon_sad.gif. The soft coating on the airbag unit is already peeling off icon_mad.gif, starting from the side areas. There are no external impacts possible in these areas. Therefore, I would say that there is no external cause. Also, there has been no excessive cleaning.

Does anyone perhaps have a similar problem? icon_question.gif

Regards,
Frank.

That problem was also normal in the Golf 4, just take a look.

But you probably already know that.

Within the first 6 months, you don't have to prove that the defect wasn't your fault; instead, the seller has to prove that the product was free of defects.

You should be entitled to a free replacement. Unfortunately, the soft-touch coating is not very durable. In almost all the cars I've seen with it, the soft-touch coating eventually peels off.
That's why I'm worried that even a replacement part might eventually peel off for you - unless the parts have been changed (-> different part number). Or perhaps you could discuss with the dealer the possibility of switching to a sport steering wheel?

I've also had the idea about the sport steering wheel. Unfortunately, I see a problem. VW only exchanges it for the same part, right? Maybe someone has a tip for me on how to best 'sell' the idea to the seller or the workshop person. I don't necessarily want to pay extra for it. icon_smile.gif

Is it possible to include photos here? If anyone is interested, I can also send them a couple of photos of the damage.

Regards,
Frank.

Hello,

I stopped by 'my' dealer yesterday. I went straight to the salesperson and explained the problem to him.
DThe salesperson had nothing to say about it; he probably knew the least about the matter. icon_question.gif
They've ordered the new airbag now, and they'll call me when it arrives.
I would really like to know for sure if what's being said about the other control unit is true. Is it possible that someone who works at VW could compare the part numbers? I hope this isn't too much to ask, but I would be interested to know.

Regards,
Frank.

I think the same customer service representative will also tell you that blue cars have different control units than red cars.
