Hi,
a major update to my disaster-prone AXR:
On Monday evening, I took the car to the workshop with three descriptions of the problems it was having.
1. Cooling water consumption, occasionally high water temperatures, and oil contamination in the cooling water.
2. A burnt charcoal-like smell coming from the engine compartment.
The head of the detachable trailer hitch has some play.
Not bad for a start. I was provided with a free rental car – a Golf4 1.6 16V with 105 horsepower (those were the slowest 100 horsepower I've ever driven).
On Thursday evening, I took a slight detour to the workshop to check on things.
Diagnosis:
No leaks and no CO2 in the cooling circuit.
Incorrect radiator fan installed.
AHK is completely new!
However, the customer service representative and the workshop foreman acknowledged a certain amount of oil in the water and decided to replace the oil cooler, as a hairline crack was suspected. They didn't try to dismiss the issue or present the solution as a last resort.
I can pick up the car on Friday.
On Friday afternoon, I'm going back to the workshop, and there, on the yard, is my Golf, which, as always, has been freshly vacuumed. This time, the workshop even washed the car

.
After returning the rental car, I can finally drive a diesel car again. After about 60 kilometers, there's no more smell – hopefully, it stays that way! The expansion tank has been properly sealed (… drive until all the water is gone…).
Does a faulty heat exchanger cause the water to smell? Well, the engine oil of a diesel engine contains a relatively large amount of soot, and even a small amount of that soot entering the water can cause such odors. Let's wait and see.
