If you're thinking about me, here's my current battery story:
On Friday, Christel drove her Polo to the store, got back in, and tried to start it again, but instead of restarting the engine about 5 seconds later, the battery completely died, to the point where the starter motor didn't even make a clicking sound.
It was a full-size car battery designed for TDIs, with a capacity of 74Ah / 680A and terminal caps.
Despite a minimal quiescent current of around 10 mA, a functioning charging system, regular acid level checks, and topping up with distilled water. She only lived for a little over 6 years.
The acid densities immediately after production were all within the well-charged range (above 1.24 kg/l), but when subjected to a 0.16 Ohm test resistor, the terminal voltage drops to approximately 1V, and the battery emits a slight hissing sound. Therefore, the device has a cell connector or grid failure.
Since I had a battery of the same size from my Ibiza that was available as a (regularly recharged) backup, I installed it in the Polo before going to the store, and now the car is running again.
Based on my positive experiences with the 45Ah / 450A minibattery in my TDI Ibiza over the past ~3 years, I will purchase a similar unit. I will install it for a few months, drive with it (to identify any manufacturing defects during the warranty period), and then put it aside as a spare:

The OEM battery installed in the ASZ Polo was a 570A Varta battery. The Ibiza has been using 450A batteries for years, and the Racepower battery is roughly in the middle of that range, so it should also be sufficient for the Polo.
