Okay, so today was the first real test run. The top speed on a straight, windless road is now 220 km/h.

Regards,
Claus.

Not bad. Considering that it can reduce consumption, minimize wear and tear, and actually increase the value of the car, it's not a bad purchase.
I'll visit my dealer on Monday and get some information about it.

Hi everyone,

... that such modifications may cause the operating license to be revoked.

Why?
According to the logic of the TÜV (German technical inspection authority), it's quite simple:

Each gear setting requires a specific amount of torque from the engine to achieve a certain speed, which in turn results in specific exhaust emissions.
Wird nun das Übersetzungsverhältnis geändert, so ändert sich auch das Abgasverhalten (im betr. Gang).
For this "new exhaust behavior," there is no approval certificate (ABE) icon_exclaim.gif icon_exclaim.gif.

So, please be very careful about who you tell this to...

Besides the exhaust emissions values, there's another issue that the TÜV (German technical inspection authority) doesn't like about these modifications: the maximum speed is altered, which isn't recorded in the vehicle registration document. This alone would be enough to cause problems, but it's also possible that any tires listed as approved for the vehicle could theoretically become invalid, etc.

I'm exasperated by this, typical German bureaucratic logic... *shakes head*.

icon_rolleyes.gif
I checked the prices for the two longer fifth gear sprockets today.
From Volkswagen: part number 02A-311.158-R, price €110; part number 02A-311.361-M, price €70.
Well, that's not going to impress anyone: €180 plus a 'fairy tale tax' for...
Two tiny gears.

Does anyone know if the longer fifth gear is also available for the Audi 80 manufactured in November 1993? Would the power of 90 HP + x (where x represents tuning) be sufficient for it, or would I more likely exceed the maximum speed limit without the longer fifth gear?

The gears for the long fifth gear are taken from the transmission of the 90hp TDI engines. In fifth gear, they have a gear ratio of 0.717.
There's also a 5-speed gearbox within the VW Group with a transmission ratio of 0.700 – that would be even longer. However, I don't know if the gear will fit. All the 6-speed gearboxes have SHORTER ratios! The vehicles have a longer final drive ratio.
Of course, the performance is sufficient in the partial load range, but the acceleration values will change. He probably won't reach his maximum speed anymore (or only with great difficulty). It's the same for me; it now goes up to 210 km/h according to the speedometer (previously 200 km/h), but it takes forever from about 190 km/h to get there. I might consider getting a chip installed. But I mostly don't drive that fast anyway, maybe 160 km/h at most, and usually even less. The noise level and fuel consumption decrease significantly (easily 10% less fuel!).
For the AHF motor, this is definitely not a bad investment; it makes driving much more pleasant. It also accelerates better, even at highway speeds, due to increased torque, etc.
The engine's revs are usually around 3400 RPM when driving at 140 km/h, if I remember correctly.

Okay, as far as I know, the Audi 80 B4 1.9 TDI models produced from October 1991 onwards were fitted with transmissions featuring a KB BAA gearbox and a fifth-gear ratio of 0.683. Can anyone confirm this? If so, is there a longer (taller) gear ratio available that would be compatible with the BAA gearbox?

Does the acceleration decrease rapidly between, say, 110 and 160 km/h, or are the losses within this speed range within an acceptable range?

And if I then tell you that a (car) gear costs about 10 euros to manufacture, it will completely blow your mind. The manufacturer sells a complete BMW 5-series gearbox for 1000 euros. Then, BMW charges the customer 3000 euros.

That's how the world is.

The DQY and EBJ transmissions, which were used by Volkswagen with the ALH engine, have a transmission ratio of 0.756 in 5th gear, coupled with a final drive ratio of 3.389.
So, it's actually quite short. icon_rolleyes.gif Is this the couple being referred to here?
Is it too long? Does anyone have a comment regarding the transition from point 4 (Ü=0.971) to point 5?
Best regards,
Kai

Hi,

I installed the 90 horsepower gearbox (which includes the gears mentioned above. GKB: ASD). Does the 90 horsepower gearbox have a different axle ratio than the 110 one? The speedometer reading is probably about 10 km/h higher than the actual speed, so it's not really a long 5th gear.

Hintergrund ist, dass wir gestern in Essen auf dieser Motorschau/Proletenschau - und auf dem Weg dorthin war die Autobahn recht frei ... - Schliesslich war ich bei ~ 4800 U/Min und gute 230 lt. Hey.

I don't know why it performed so well yesterday. Usually, it stops at 225 km/h and just under 4600 RPM. I was riding behind someone for a longer period beforehand, and I think that's what caused it.

Thanks and best regards,
arne

I have a Golf 4 TDI ALH engine (still with 90 hp). What is the part number I need to get the extended 5-speed gearbox?

Year of construction: 2001.

It's mentioned at least twice in this thread. Please read through it – you'll find out more about it there.

'Hey everyone, do the part numbers fit a CYP 5-speed gearbox for a G3 AFN engine? I haven't been able to figure that out clearly from the thread so far.'

The renovation sounds very interesting to me.

Yes, that should fit! You don't even need to remove the transmission.
