Many short trips significantly increase fuel consumption.

Hi Rainer,

"Short distance" is probably a matter of definition -> it depends on driving style and the amount of stop-and-go traffic.

Approximately 90% of my driving is commuting to and from work, with each leg being about 18 km of country road, including several long stretches through villages, but without any traffic lights. Vehicle details are in my signature.
I can mostly operate in 5th gear between 1100 and 1500 rpm, and I only need to come to a complete stop very rarely.
I let it roll a lot and therefore brake very rarely.

I get my occasional dose of driving fun from the torque in my garage.

The average speed during the trip is around 50 km/h, and the car consumes approximately 4 liters of fuel.

Hi,

My best fuel consumption was just under 4 liters per 100 kilometers.
Fueled up at the highway rest stop, then headed towards the Lüneburg Heath and back again using the same tank of gas. In the end, the odometer showed approximately 1400 km.

Not even once did I use full throttle, always using the highest gear, exploiting every downhill slope, and never exceeding 90-100 km/h under my own power. The average fuel consumption (MFA value) was 3.7 liters.

2 people, minimal luggage.
I filled the tank completely.

The journey was incredibly boring, it took forever, and I don't want to do something like that again. But it was really interesting to see what's possible.

"Normally, my Golf consumes 5.7-6.4 liters. However, that includes several high-speed sections, city driving, and traffic jams. (It has AXG injectors, a GT1749V turbocharger, and has been chip-tuned, among other modifications)."

The maximum consumption value is approximately 7.5 liters.
After approximately 750 km, the range was at its limit. However, this was mostly due to driving at maximum speed and frequent, unnecessary accelerations.

Everything comes with 16" 195-size tires.

Greetings.
Thomas.

I've been driving my Golf since the very first mile (well, I think it had about 20 miles on it when I bought it). Since then, I've kept a precise record of every drop of fuel I've used.

Result: Total distance driven: 228,702 km, total fuel consumed: 12,888.91 liters, resulting in a fuel consumption of 5.63 liters per 100 km.

Driving style: Everything that happens in a normal car's life, from full throttle to driving 1,000 km continuously on a Swedish country road with a layer of packed snow.

However, I have been the primary driver of the vehicle for the last 32,828 kilometers, and before that, it was my wife. Since then, I have averaged 5.30 liters per 100 kilometers.

Minimum 4.4 liters per 100 kilometers on Austrian country roads (with 4 people and luggage, but without a roof rack).

Maximum 7.7 liters per 100 kilometers.

Best regards, D.

While we're on the subject:

Würzburg - Fulda - Würzburg via A7, as fast as possible -> 8.6 liters (average 134 km/h, including entering and exiting the cities!)

Würzburg - Ebern - Würzburg via A70 with a VW T3 1.6D - as fast as possible (125 km/h with a tailwind) -> 11.5 liters (by the way, it was a 5-speed).

@d short.
No, it was a coincidence with Starnberg.

I have something else to offer.

From Frankfurt to Hamburg, always driving steadily at around 90 km/h... *yawn*

Mine fluctuates between 6.8 and 7.5.

I never go below a 5, but my car has managed to impress someone before.

At 7.5, I'm already being quite aggressive, but I only briefly exceed 200, keeping the material's limitations in mind. I feel most comfortable at 160-180.
To stay below 7.2 [presumably liters per 100 kilometers or miles per gallon] on longer highway trips.

I'm glad I don't have a 2.5L engine; my neighbor drives one and always gets much worse fuel economy, consistently showing 9.x on the fuel consumption display. (Referring to a 2.5L Octavia, 5th generation, automatic transmission).

By the way, I'm currently using the original program, and the power consumption is roughly the same.

I still have 4.5 liters icon_redface.gif available for an Opel Kadett E 1.6 with 75 horsepower icon_surprised.gif, which would be enough to drive from Frankfurt to Hamburg at a speed of 90 km/h.

and one more:

Frankfurt (Main) > Sölden via Würzburg - Ulm - Fern Pass.

in 3:55

Driving on the highway, consistently at 180-190 km/h.

= 9.5 liters

with a Porsche 924 (the one with the Audi engine).

Hello everyone,

Okay, I'm going to briefly share my fuel consumption figures and experiences with my Audi A3 TDI (engine code AGR):

- Maximum consumption: Würzburg - Büsum, almost entirely on the highway (BAB), approximately 720 km in just under 5 hours icon_redface.gif, consumption approximately 7.4 l/100km.

- The standard fuel consumption is approximately 4.7 to 5.1 liters per 100 kilometers, with about 80% driving on rural roads and 20% in the city, driven at a brisk to very brisk pace, but still with a forward-looking driving style.

- Minimum fuel consumption: Holiday route from Würzburg, Germany to Lake Maggiore, Italy, using motorways in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Italy, mountain passes, and coastal roads. Vehicle loaded with 2 people + a lot of luggage. Driving style: fast and anticipatory. Fuel consumption: 4.7 liters/100km (total driving distance approximately 1500 km, including excursions and local tours).

Perhaps a few more remarks on consumer behavior:
Initially, my fuel consumption was always above 5 liters per 100 kilometers, usually around 5.5 to 5.8. After a few months of getting used to the TDI engine, the consumption gradually decreased (and the engine's break-in period certainly also helped).
Especially the shift to a torque-oriented driving style reduces fuel consumption. I previously had a gasoline car that always required at least medium engine speeds to achieve brisk acceleration. Adapting to a TDI driving style takes some time icon_cry.gif. However, for about 5 years now, my fuel consumption has remained within the aforementioned range of 4.7 to 5.1 liters per 100 km.
On the highway, the AGR usually allows for a slightly higher consumption and then reaches just above 6 l/100km, but at quite a brisk pace icon_wink.gif.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas!

Regards,
Alex.

I'm glad I don't have a 2.5, one of my neighbors drives much more conservatively and always has a fuel consumption reading of 9.x. (Referring to a 2.5 Octavia, 5th generation, automatic transmission).

Okay, I want one too. Where did he have it customized?

or does he actually drive a Superb? icon_wink.gif

'My colleague is achieving an average of 8.5 in his sales performance while working in the field.'

If he drives his car with the same driving profile and uses the 2.5 engine, achieving 9.x [likely referring to fuel consumption in a specific unit] is no problem icon_twisted.gif.

Okay, here's the fuel consumption data for the Golf IV 1.6 16V: The average consumption is 11-12 liters under full load and with the accelerator pedal fully pressed (approximately 200 km/h according to the speedometer). Even at 130 km/h, the consumption is still 8-8.5 liters.

My Passat (1Z model) consumes approximately 5.2 - 5.5 liters of diesel per 100 km, based on my driving style. The route is about 25 km of rural roads with some villages and hills. I haven't been able to properly test it on the highway yet (my father once said that 160 km/h is enough, but then he drove at 120 km/h), as I don't often drive on the highway (but when I do, I'm currently pushing it quite a bit, reaching about 200 km/h downhill according to the speedometer, with 4,200 - 4,300 RPM). Otherwise, the fuel consumption after about 600 km of moderate highway driving wasn't higher than usual, even though my father tends to take his foot off the gas before the speed limit signs and then brakes.

Best regards, WarLord.

Hi Ulf,

My ASZ engine in my Golf is very versatile; it can both drink fuel (like a thirsty engine) and be very economical. I've found that it's surprisingly fuel-efficient on a straight road with cruise control, consistently staying below 100 km/h in 6th gear. I once drove from here (Olpe) to the Baltic Sea (Lübeck), a distance of 470 km, and averaged 4.5 liters. However, I don't enjoy driving that slowly for extended periods, so I only did it once. I can't comment on the weather conditions at the time, but it was summer. Just on Wednesday, I drove the route in the opposite direction. I drove from Lübeck to Hamburg, a distance of about 60 km, continuously at 210 km/h (it's a fantastic highway there with no hills). The instantaneous fuel consumption was consistently at exactly 13.1 liters. From Hamburg, I used cruise control and often drove below 100 km/h, sometimes at 120-130 km/h. The MFA (multi-function display) showed 6.3 liters in Olpe. That's actually the typical fuel consumption for normal driving. However, if you prioritize fuel economy and drive slowly, frequently using 6th gear, it consistently consumes less than 5 liters on the MFA. Unfortunately, I tend to drive economically for a while, and then I need to hurry, so 6 liters is a normal and, in my opinion, a very good value.
