I have another testimonial to share:
We had an Opel Astra Caravan DTI 2.0 as a company car, first registered in January 2001.
I can confirm the oil consumption. When driving at full throttle on the highway, after approximately 1000 km, I was missing a whole liter (we used Aral 5W40). The speedometer indicated a top speed of 210 km/h. In countless duels on the road, the 90 HP VW & AUDI TDI models were clearly outmatched. A Golf Kombi with a TDI (whatever engine was in it) couldn't win either, although I couldn't overtake it. I can also confirm the extreme lack of acceleration from a standstill: When starting from a standstill, the engine seems to take a 'moment of reflection' before it starts, as if the engine control unit is processing the 'accelerate' command too slowly. Proper (turbo-) boost kicks in around 2200 RPM...
'The power consumption is also significantly higher than with our G4 ALHs...'
And I won't write anything further about the suspension, because that's a bad joke .
What I forgot to mention: there were never any technical problems with the engine. The car never let us down, even with rough driving. After 60,000 km, the 'pleasure' came to an abrupt end when a Volkswagen Golf rear-ended it, causing a total loss.

Here's something interesting about DI/DTI:
Opel uses timing chains (as far as I recall), not timing belts.
In addition, the pumps can self-adjust, so you don't need to set a specific position.
Doesn't that make life easier, or what?
But I don't believe the story about the 100 horsepower DTI Astra that couldn't beat a Golf. Okay with 90 horsepower, but not with the 110 horsepower version, and I doubt it's true for the new 100 horsepower TDI either.
Perhaps the Opel had been modified (with performance-enhancing parts). --------------------------------------------

'These are common rail diesels, as far as I know. Furthermore, I believe it doesn't matter where the pump is located in a common rail system. The common rail is always under high pressure, and the injectors open accordingly. And regarding station wagons: In my opinion, the Passat is unbeatable if you have children. I used to own one not too long ago, and no other car offers that much legroom in the back (even when the seat is pushed all the way forward). The downside is the slightly smaller trunk.' Please note that I am currently referring to the 35i B4 model, but I don't think that has changed with the newer versions.
Best regards, WarLord.

Typical Opel, I guess. I've always known it this way from our old company Astras (1.6L). It's only dangerous if a new Opel owner gets this car and doesn't check the oil level for the first 1,000 to 2,000 kilometers.
Is it possible to use a less expensive oil with DTI? Gruß Christian

Perhaps the Oppel was chipped?
Please note, I'm not talking about the acceleration, but about the final speed!
It just kept spinning for ages. It's probably also due to the fact that, during its (short) lifespan, it was only operated at higher RPMs.

Typical Opel, then. I'm used to it from our old company Astras (1.6 L), and I don't know any other way.
I've experienced something different with our Kadett: after 200,000 km, the piston rings were completely worn out, one piston was completely damaged, and another one was cracked. It needed a new set of spark plugs every four months (towards the end). C16NE, as far as I know.
Best regards, WarLord.

Great link, Gremlin.
Is there another similar documentary about TDI engines or other engines? --------------------------------------------

Hi Holger,
Click on "Tech News" at www.tuneline.at and then check out the links on the left-hand side. You'll not only find the one that Gremlin posted, but also many others that deal with VAG engines.

Since we're already talking about informative websites. Does anyone have a shell diagram for the 66kW VE TDI (ALH) and 74kW PD TDI (ATD) engines?
Actively seeking.
OlBe
P.S.: I personally consider an oil consumption of 0.5 liters per 1000 km to be unacceptable, especially considering the strict emission standards. On the one hand, people mess around with things like EGR systems, and on the other hand, they generously spew oil out of the pipe. Fabia I TDI, EZ06/01 (1,9/74kW, ATD)

By "shell diagram," I mean not performance reports, but rather the map of specific fuel consumption and effective pressure versus engine speed.
Stay cheerful.
