Although I recall from another thread that someone discovered the charger likely has the fewest problems with cold oil, and that the mechanical components within the motor itself are more critical. Does anyone remember which thread this was discussed in?

Hello,
@Ulf:
You really put me through a lot: http://www.ibiza-forum.de/thread.php?threadid=16730
It really took me a long time to read through everything (at least 12 forum pages).
I agree with all the statements made by this oil expert.
You have already had your specific questions answered by him.
When it comes to engine oil, it's important to use the specified Volkswagen (VW) standard and follow the manufacturer's recommendations for the specific vehicle.
The brand of oil manufacturer doesn't really matter much these days, as there are only a few major players left. And once the required specifications are met, you don't necessarily need to buy the most expensive oil, because with those, you're mostly paying for the advertising and the brand name, not necessarily better quality. So, whether you buy it from a specialist shop, a workshop, a gas station, or a supermarket doesn't really matter. The very expensive oils, even if they meet the same specifications and approvals, mainly benefit the manufacturer/seller, rather than the buyer. However, you should be extremely careful with cheap supermarket oils that have non-German labels; it's generally not advisable to buy them.
When it comes to oil and viscosity recommendations from the manufacturer, you should refer to the vehicle's year of manufacture, not current recommendations for modern, high-performance engines. (A drastic example: using a PD-oil in a 1Z-TDI engine because it is supposedly 'better' oil and recommended for TDIs.)

Oh dear, and what do you suggest for automatic transmissions? My AHF (110 hp) already revs up to almost 3000 rpm with just moderate acceleration before it shifts. It's really hard on the engine when it's very cold, but it's practically unavoidable if you don't want to be a traffic obstruction.

Hi Florian,
You're absolutely right about that.
Of course, you can't warm up an automatic TDI as gently as a manual TDI.
However, I only run it at speeds up to 3000 RPM for a warm-up period very rarely.
In the morning, even at a maximum speed of 2500 RPM, I can move very quickly without being an obstacle.
Especially for drivers of automatic transmissions, it is all the more important to use good and fresh oil.
Thinner oil might also make a difference there, as the engine will inevitably run at higher speeds and experience greater stress when cold.
Another recommendation I have is to recode the automatic transmission for a more relaxed and torque-friendly shifting behavior. I followed instructions from Gremlin and garth.brooks and recoded my transmission to 00050. I'm very happy with the result. Finally, the strong TDI torque is being utilized effectively, and unnecessary high RPMs are avoided.
Best regards, Georg.

'Thank you, Georg, that sounds interesting. Where can I find this guide? One of the main drawbacks of automatic transmissions is that the beautiful torque isn't really utilized, or that it often downshifts unnecessarily. Furthermore, I want to reassure you about the durability of the AHF (presumably referring to a specific component). Mine has 170,000 kilometers on it, and I'm amazed at how well it handles everything. It feels like new. I regularly drive it at night on the highway for hours with full throttle, and I also enjoy full-throttle acceleration in second gear when all the torque goes into the converter and it makes that wonderful, powerful sound. Sorry, please don't judge me.'

Title: Again: Adjusting the automatic transmission.
"Die Sonne scheint hell und warm. Die Vögel zwitschern fröhlich in den BĂ€umen. Ein leichter Wind weht durch das Gras. Es ist ein perfekter Tag fĂŒr einen Spaziergang."
Hi there,
following combination in a Skoda Octavia:
engine: ALH
Transmission: FDB (4-speed automatic with adaptive driving program).
ECU: 01M 927 733 LJ, Transmission: AG4, Gearbox: 01M 4963.
softcoding: 0000
Problem: The entire system is too sensitive to the accelerator pedal.
I found some information in the American TDI forum regarding the transmission coding. Their suggestion to code it to "02" resulted in: harder and shorter gear shifts, a slightly less sensitive throttle pedal, and more frequent use of the kick-down function.
I then tried oil 01, and the gear changes felt smoother, and the throttle response was slightly better compared to using oil 00.
Now, the transmission can be coded up to 50 or even higher, accepting all values.
There must be some kind of list or something that contains the coding information.
"I'm frustrated by the large number of accepted codes; other ECUs only accept a few specific ones and reject everything else. It's incredibly tedious to have to try them all, and you can easily go through a full tank of fuel doing so."
I also tried setting the engine control unit (ECU) to manual mode for testing purposes. As expected, this made the gear changes very abrupt, but it didn't change the sensitivity of the accelerator pedal. It seems like the transmission control unit (TCU) sends a request via the powertrain CAN bus.
Let me be clear again: I want the transmission to *not* upshift or downshift when I'm driving uphill at 90 km/h and then slowly accelerate. The engine would have far more torque available than necessary for that situation, so why should the throttle valve open and cause the engine to rev up to 3500 rpm? At 2300 rpm, it would also run more efficiently in terms of fuel consumption.

Hello Gremlin,
I hope my contribution isn't too unqualified or already discussed, but have you spoken to a chip tuner yet?
The gear shift mechanism probably consists of nothing more than a simple lookup table for each gear.
Or is it really not possible to access the transmission control unit?

Title: Recoding Automatic Transmission - 01N ATM AG4 Softcoding
"Die Sonne scheint hell und warm. Die Vögel zwitschern fröhlich in den BĂ€umen. Ein leichter Wind weht durch das Gras. Es ist ein perfekter Tag fĂŒr einen Spaziergang."
Hi Gremlin and everyone else,
"The other day, I just randomly encoded values as 00002, then 00010, then 00050, and finally 00127."
The world might not notice, but: I find it more enjoyable to drive. In my opinion, the shift points remain roughly the same, but it reacts noticeably slower to accelerator pedal movements. The gear changes happen much faster (and therefore a bit harder), and the torque converter engages sooner; in my experience, it often engaged only seconds after a gear change.
Insgesamt : Schade dass ich mich das nicht schon frĂŒher getraut hab. I'll leave it as is.
"The question about Gremlins remains: Is there a table that explains what adjustments can be made?"

The 127 is actually quite pleasant to drive.
During a short drive around the block, I noticed that the dynamic shift program seems to be malfunctioning. I still need to "find out" more about it, but that would be very good. There's nothing worse than when the transmission thinks that just because I overtook two old ladies, I'm now in F1 mode. Then it downshifts immediately with every slight touch of the accelerator...it's really annoying. At 130 km/h in third gear and 4000 rpm...really great, VW.
"By the way, Garth: try setting the code to 00001. It seems to cut power when you let off the accelerator while going uphill, as if it has a 30 horsepower engine."
According to the Audi repair manual, there is no coding list available.
"The coding indicates '0000 (not intended/used)."
"It's showing massive effects for something that doesn't even exist. Try entering 00005 or 00006 and drive on a hilly route."

Hi, thanks for the tip, I will do that.
Here's what I noticed. I once had a Daimler 280 ATM. It had 150,000 km on the clock, which was noticeable in the gearbox. Of course, there was nothing electronic about it, but there was a small lever on the side of the gearbox that controlled the oil pressure in the transmission. Setting it to its maximum position made the gearbox shift much faster, although it jerked more (which doesn't bother me).
The DC employee said back then that it was explicitly designed to compensate for wear and tear.
I've noticed something similar on mine recently. Could it be that the electronics in the AG4 are affecting the oil pressure? Otherwise, how can you explain the faster shifting, or rather, the quicker engagement of the clutches?
If the pressure increases, the question is how much, and whether using 00127 might already be excessive.
The occasional switching errors I was experiencing seem to have disappeared.
The dynamic programming seems to be still present, but it's very subdued. If I really press the accelerator a few times, the transmission starts engaging again...

The electronics definitely influence the oil pressure via a solenoid valve.
This is based on the usual initial parameters and the transmission oil and water temperature (engine).
If you trick the engine into thinking it's cold, the transmission will shift differently, just like when you simulate cold oil for the transmission.
This can go so far that the clutches are damaged because the oil pressure is kept too low due to a faulty reading. The Tiptronic transmission apparently had similar problems in some V6 TDI engines.
I think it's more likely that your shifting problems are due to the tuning. The transmission probably can't handle that much extra torque, especially without adjusting the fuel pressure for the increased power.
"Nothelle, for example, explicitly points out the necessary adjustments to the transmission control when performing chip tuning."

hi Gremlin,
I had that suspicion too.
The shifting problems occurred when changing gears between 2nd and 3rd. Briefly releasing the accelerator and then pressing it again, even lightly, would cause a delay of 2-3 seconds before the clutch engaged abruptly.
To make sure it wasn't related to the chip, I avoided using it for four weeks. The result: It happens independently of the chip. It occurs about once a week.
Wegen dem Ăldruck muĂte ich so doof fragen, da ich ĂŒberhaupt keine ( gratis) Unterlagen ĂŒber das 01N bis jetzt gefunden hab. HasDo you need something?
Nach deiner Aussage schlieĂe ich daĂ wir herausgefunden haben wie man verscheiĂbedinge VerĂ€nderungen am AG4 kompensiert. StiDo you understand?

Depending on how sympathetic you are to the engine, I would especially consider a short warm-up period (approximately 5 minutes) at low speed, particularly in winter, before getting onto the highway.
Ulf!
You wouldn't encourage others to commit petty crimes, would you?
A celebratory lap like that is and remains prohibited. See §30(1) of the Road Traffic Regulations (StVO).
Furthermore:
Theory aside: I don't think it makes a difference whether you warm up your car or not. At least, I always hear from people who warm up their cars that they have problems, while people who don't bother to do so never seem to have any issues. I mean normal or 'faster' warm-up times, not immediately revving the engine to the redline right after preheating.

Do not exceed 2000 rpm, the distance is 15 km, and avoid full-throttle acceleration within that area.
