...and yet, there seem to be some that do - such as my AJM TDI - which have the 5-speed gearbox but not 285Nm of torque, but 315Nm...

The 5-speed gearbox is the AJM (285Nm), while the 310Nm gearbox is the ATJ with a 6-speed transmission, and also has 85kW / 115PS icon_wink.gif. All AJM gearboxes with 310Nm or more have been chipped or otherwise tuned.

According to the sales brochure, my AJM engine had 310 Nm of torque.

Last half of the model year, 6 gears, and a 90,000 km service interval.

Hi, to avoid opening a new thread right away, I'll ask my question here, as it's also very relevant to the topic. Specifically, how many Nm can the 5-speed gearbox handle, and how many Nm can the 6-speed gearbox handle?

I once read that the 6-speed transmission, likely the GKB-DRW, is designed for peak torque values of 350 Nm, emphasizing the word 'peak.'

@mullemaus: There are also AJMs with a 6-speed gearbox!

@mullemaus

I was just about to say that I have an AJM engine with a 6-speed gearbox. Unfortunately, I don't know the torque output. (I bought it used.) It would be interesting to find that out.
Best regards, pit.

Simply check the limits (e.g., using VAGCOM, measuring block 8?) to see the values. From the torque reading at 1900 rpm, you can determine if it's producing 310 Nm (approximately 56 mg/stroke) or 285 Nm (which should be around 51 mg).

You can even do this while the vehicle is stationary: press the accelerator to bring the engine speed to around 1900 RPM and hold it there for about 2 seconds. The torque reading should then appear as the highest of the three displayed values (read from the screen or log the data).

Hi Ulf,

Thanks for the tip, I've already checked my old diagrams, and it seems it's unfortunately a 285 Nm engine. But I'll test it again next weekend.

Thank you and best regards.

However, the numbers make it seem more tragic than it actually is, because there is a difference of a hundred between them.

In reality, the data often shows values around 300 or 325 Nm, or even higher - and then, a 25 Nm difference for the "weaker" engine doesn't seem so bad anymore, does it? icon_wink.gif

So, the chip tuner I trust said that there are two AJM variants:
5 gears -> 285 Nm.
6th gear -> 310 Nm.
The VW sales strategy was simply to market the new 6-speed transmissions, which were introduced in the Golf IV at the time, more effectively.
You would need to read out the software from both models.

My Golf: AJM, 6-speed, 4motion, 310 Nm.
Part Number: 038 906 019 AM
Bosch Part No. 0 281 010 091.
Material No. 0813.

Well, such simple and catchy statements are sometimes true, but there are probably facts behind the different transmissions: namely, the maximum input torque, which is structurally higher for the 6-speed than for the 5-speed.

Unfortunately, I don't have that dataset in my collection... but you can use VAGCOM to "look inside" yourself, as described.

Okay, I once logged the data and got 50.2 mg/hub for my AJM 6-speed, which probably means 285 Nm of torque. I'm currently having an issue with the mass airflow sensor (MAF), but I think the torque limit is probably hard-coded and shouldn't be affected by an aging MAF sensor, right?

That's correct. The LMM only reduces the soot threshold, also known as the soot limit.

In a Passat? With a 6-speed AJM engine? icon_eek.gif I'm not familiar with that. icon_wink.gif

Shouldn't that be an ATJ engine in the Passat?

That's exactly what I think too. I'm happy to be corrected, but I believe the 310Nm and 6-speed transmission in the Passat is not an AJM, but an ATJ. That's also why I made that post back then icon_razz.gif.

The 5-speed gearbox is the AJM (285 Nm), while the 310 Nm gearbox is the ATJ with a 6-speed transmission, and also has 85 kW / 115 PS. All AJM gearboxes with 310 Nm or more have been chipped or otherwise tuned.

No, that's not how it is either. I have a 6-speed AJM transmission in my Golf with 310 Nm of torque. I believe that the first PD engine in the Passat (due to the longitudinal engine layout) was generally an ATJ. There is no difference in the software between an AJM engine with 285 Nm and one with 310 Nm in the Golf.
That's also why I have my 'marketing-related' suspicion.

Greetz

Okay, the Passat, starting around 10/98, only had the AJM engine as the first PD (Pump Duese) engine. The successor to the AJM is the ATJ. The AJM in the Passat is a 5-speed with 285 Nm of torque. The ATJ is a 6-speed with 310 Nm of torque.

In the Golf, there is no software-related difference between the AJM engine with 285 Nm and the one with 310 Nm.
Therefore, also my 'marketing-related' assumption.

Somewhere, the NM values icon_wink.gif must come from. If it's the same engine including the attachments, it must be coming from the software, right? icon_wink.gif

On the page with the technical articles, you can also find information about the engines used, etc. However, there's a mistake with the AJM. It states that the engine code (MKB) is AJM, and the transmission code (GKB) is EKL, which doesn't exist. The EKL is listed with 6 (presumably 6 gears?), but is designated as 01E.5. However, according to my icon_lol.gif, the EKL does not exist. icon_sad.gif
