. . . but (to be honest), not a word about any real performance gain or better filtering compared to the standard part.

Here's the translation:

"So, what's implied between the lines is:"
"1. Since we don't want to disappoint our customers who are always looking for the latest trends, we offer this as well (and we also make a little extra money off the "sports filter" craze)."
"However, our product also doesn't offer any concrete technical advantages over the standard filter."

The first thing I did for my AJM, after buying it, was replace the air filter with a cotton filter from JR. That was at 58,000 km. Now I'm driving at 98,000 km and have a new mass airflow sensor (MAF). However, I installed that myself, but I messed it up. icon_redface.gif
Otherwise, I can say that the intake tract, after the filter, appears clean, and no visible dirt residue was found on a white cloth. Regarding the mass airflow sensor (MAF), I also use oil very sparingly, so that too much oil doesn't accumulate on the sensor element.

I won't comment here on any potential fuel savings or performance gains. However, I replaced the air intake nozzle on the air filter housing because there appeared to be a difference in diameter (essentially a bottleneck) compared to the connecting pipe between the air filter housing and the engine.

Hello,
Well, the air pressure is slightly higher before the air filter than it is after the air filter; ...

Well, the idea was to make this ratio a bit more balanced, or to make it easier for the engine to draw in air.

The defect is caused by the fact that when the mass airflow sensor is turned off, it is heated up completely for a short time (usually to burn off dirt deposits such as dust). This causes the oil to carbonize, and in the worst case, it can cause a short circuit on the sensitive conductor paths of the mass airflow sensor element!

Hello,
This applies only to hot-wire air mass meters (older version), but to my knowledge, it does not apply to hot-film air mass meters (newer version). What type is installed in the newer 1Z TDI models?

So, is the argument invalid?

Hi,

Well, an oily adhesive layer doesn't work well with hot-wire mass flow meters either, and it messes up the readings.

Best regards, Rainer.

Hello,

'I'm not entirely sure about that, but my general suspicion is that the often-described excessive wear of the mass airflow sensors (MAF sensors) is caused by other mechanical or electronic issues, rather than simply by hardened, carbonized oil residue.'

I haven't really taken good care of my LMM; it's been exposed to wheel cleaner spray and has also been subjected to air filter oil showers.

Furthermore:
Even with paper filters, I was able to observe a layer of soot that had accumulated throughout the entire intake system, including on the inlet and outlet grilles of the mass airflow sensor (MAF).
I'm assuming this is diesel soot that the car inhaled during long highway stretches from truck exhaust pipes. (Even the most powerful paper filters probably can't capture such small particles icon_wink.gif).
=> Never any issues with the LMM.

@ObenbeiMutti:

I can confirm the issue with the soot-covered grilles. And yet, my DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) shows no signs of age after 201,000 km (thankfully icon_wink.gif). I think it's probably still the original DPF, as I only acquired the car at 165,000 km, but you can't be entirely sure about that icon_rolleyes.gif. However, I believe that this soot doesn't just come from the highway driving, but also from normal everyday use (even outside of highways). IMO, truck soot particles are too large to pass through the paper filter, so the soot on the grilles also comes from engines that produce smaller soot particles (from TDI, CDI, JTD, etc.).

Greetings to everyone.

Several years ago, I went to a car dealership and looked at a Honda Civic Type-R with 200 horsepower that was on display in the showroom.
I was surprised to see that the original manufacturer had installed an open K&N sports air filter.
So, are there actually production vehicles that use sports air filters?

Besides that, I read a report/review titled "Blaubes Salat Tagebuch" in AutoBild issue 48/2000, where Motorol was examined in the Veedol laboratory, and it was determined that two of the Veedol test values deviated significantly upwards compared to the average Motorol value.
- Chromium: (ppm) 28 // normal: 8
-Silicon 32 // :15

The Veedol technical director explained that the sports air filter and the coarser filter material are the cause of the increased values.

"I've been using a K&N air filter myself for 80,000 km. After cleaning it for the first time after 50,000 km, it was quite dirty. At the same time, I always clean the mass airflow sensor (MAF). Originally, it was a Pierburg MAF sensor, replaced after 200,000 km in my G3.1Z, and I'm using a PSI box with 108 hp, which I've had for 80,000 km."

It would be interesting to include other reports about tissue filters in the forum.

I've always been curious about how well tissue filters actually clean.
Unfortunately, I am not aware of any other reports.

Hi Jarek,
