Hello, I enjoyed reading the discussion!
Driving the ALH engine, which now has 95 kW thanks to the tuning box!
I have to mention (see the match against Chip) that he doesn't give his all in the 5th set!
It goes up to about 205 km/h at around 4400 to 4500 RPM, but not into the red zone!
However, I think that running the engine at a high RPM for over an hour yesterday is probably not good in the long run, or am I wrong?
Here, a lot is being written about the 'long 5th gear,' but also about how this could lead to the operating permit being revoked!

How much does the long fifth gear actually improve performance, or is it not simpler to just opt for a six-speed transmission?

I often notice that cars with 130 horsepower are slower than mine up to about 160 km/h, but then they can keep up, and unfortunately, they start falling behind again around 180 km/h.

Would a gearbox from a 130 PD be the best option?

Thank you. Best regards.

Hi.

"Redlining" here doesn't mean going all the way to the red zone, but rather reaching the rated RPM, which, according to my information, varies between 3750 and 4150 rpm depending on the engine type for the 1.9 models.

And that's where you were already exceeding the limit by a significant margin: about 10%, which already increased the purely mechanical load on the engine by around 20% compared to the "normal" maximum speed for everyday use.

@Arne:

"How cold was it during your 230 km/h 'spree'? Apparently, the outside temperature has quite an influence on TDI engines, according to some unconfirmed rumors, which explains things like their weakness in summer, etc. If it was as cold as -7 degrees Celsius where you were, like it is here in Berlin, that would be a good explanation."

Best regards,

January.

Hi Jan,

Yes, the outside temperature was -6°C. My oil temperature was then 112°C.
This morning it was also faster than usual. According to the tachometer, it was at 4700 RPM. Does the tachometer actually lie a lot?

'Because my transmission is showing a speed of 46.6 km/h at 1000 RPM – which would mean a real speed of 219 km/h at 4700 RPM – I can't quite believe that. My speedometer shows around 225 km/h, but it's probably lying by about 10-12 km/h, right?'

Could someone explain this to me?

Thanks and best regards,
arne

Hi Arne,

Did you take the tire rolling circumference into account when specifying the speed?
In the Volkswagen Golf 3, the AFN engine with its standard tires only achieves approximately 44.5 km/h at 1000 rpm.
At 4700 RPM, that would still be around 209 km/h, and a speedometer error of about 15 km/h above 200 is quite plausible...

Hi Ulf,

I didn't take the tire rolling circumference into account at all. I'm using the original tires that came with the Corrado. Therefore, it should fit – or at least, that's what I thought.

I got this value from here:
http://media.seat.com/en/ginebra02/aleman/degeneva.pdf

'This is the 90 HP gearbox. I have the exact same gearbox as the Cordoba 90 HP TDI (page 8/19 in the PDF). Specifically, it has a 0.717 ratio for 5th gear and a 3.158 final drive ratio. The overall transmission ratio is 46.6.'

The AFN also has a different transmission; check the specifications for the 110 model – it's listed with a top speed of 44.9 km/h at 1,000 rpm.

This morning, I set the average speed on the MFA (Multi-Function Display) to zero while driving at almost full throttle (a little over 225 km/h)... and lo and behold: 212 km/h. So my speedometer is definitely inaccurate! I read the engine RPM using VAG Com while stationary, and the value is about 120 RPM too high in the shift indicator display.

What do you mean, Ulf? - You others too, of course icon_smile.gif.

Regards,
arne

Hi Arne,

Your MFA measurement aligns with my attempts to measure speedometer deviation, also using the original tires on an Ibiza equipped with an ASV machine (in its standard configuration).

Driving in the direction of Hanover on a flat road (possibly slightly downhill), with an estimated temperature of around 15 degrees Celsius in May or June. The speedometer showed 210 km/h, but I had a Palm GPS device that fluctuated between 199 and 200 km/h, indicating a difference of 10-11 km/h between the displayed speed and the actual speed, which is essentially the same as yours.

Best regards,

January.

Hi Arne,

Please enter all the data into the sheet for calculating the speed of the differential lock (DZR), including the information about the Corrado tires. This will definitely show you the relationship between the PRM value and kilometers per hour.
