Hi,

I can't imagine that the problem is with the EGR valve, because the car apparently doesn't produce soot when there's boost pressure.

I think this is more likely due to a slow build-up of boost pressure or too much fuel injection between 1200 and 1700 RPM. I'm not sure how to counteract that without adjusting the characteristic curves.

See you later.
Greetings.
Thomas.

I suggest: Adjusting the pump characteristic curve (through adaptation or control system adjustment - it would at least be worth trying). icon_wink.gif
Could it be that you are already too fixated on chip tuning? icon_lol.gif

By the way, it's possible that the Golf might get a chip soon, but only after the underlying problem is resolved. I don't want to complain about it if the actual cause lies elsewhere.

Okay, but still, try searching for "Ruckelabhilfe" here and check how your pump is configured.
AGR, as a trial , completely deactivating (metal) is something I would also try sometime, you never know...

Hi Ulf,

"I tested this on my pump. When I shift the pump cover towards the "fatter" side, meaning towards the injection lines, it eventually starts to produce black smoke across the entire RPM range (along with the characteristic jerking). The problem is that adjusting the pump cover doesn't just affect the affected RPM range, but the entire RPM range. So, if he sets the cover to be "leaner" with the MSW (tuning software), he loses power at higher RPMs." Furthermore, it is also possible to...
"That he would have to adjust the cover so far to achieve absolutely smoke-free operation, that the engine control unit (ECU) would go into emergency mode, and even with a marking, it's not easy to find the original position again." I think I'm not telling you anything new here!

Adapting the settings via VAG Com would also be a possibility that should at least be tried. However, I doubt that the adjustment range will be sufficient. But trying it out will give you a more accurate result!

That's why my idea was to implement this "comparison logging," because then you can see exactly why one ALH engine with ASV nozzles is producing excessive smoke and another isn't!

With the access codes, all doors are easily opened. The possibilities are virtually limitless, and it doesn't always have to be "misused" to improve performance.
Often, much can be understood by comparing two sets of data, or by eliminating systematic errors icon_evil.gif (see Bertil). But I understand that it's not realistic to expect someone to rewrite their entire calibration tables. I just wanted to point out that there are other methods for doing so. Since Marz. installed ASV injectors, I simply assumed that he might also be interested in chip tuning. In that case, his tuner could address this soot problem directly. But before that, it should be clear where the soot actually comes from.

Were the nozzles new or used?
How did you connect the NHG?

See you later.

Good evening!
Thank you for putting so much thought into this...

Okay, the nozzles are new, but I didn't replace the entire injector bodies, just the nozzle inserts. That's why I didn't have any problems with the plug...

I'll try to get this sorted out with the AGR as soon as possible. Unfortunately, I don't have a "workshop" in my student apartment. I won't be able to work on my projects again until next weekend when I'm visiting my parents, where I have much more space and equipment.

Should I run a log and adjust the injectors tomorrow? Maybe you should take a look at this.

Hi,

"Sorry for the persistent questions, but did you adjust the nozzles, or have them adjusted? Is the opening pressure 220/300 bar? That changes if you use the same holder with larger nozzles!" If you only replaced the nozzles, the soot could also be caused by that.

I definitely think that logging everything is a good idea.
Do you happen to know your tax identification number by heart?

Hello Thomas,

No, I haven't adjusted the opening pressure. According to other statements, he shouldn't actually change... icon_rolleyes.gif

I have an LDA, but I'm not entirely satisfied with it yet. The regulated boost pressure is supposedly okay at 0.95 bar according to the LDA, but the overshoots it shows (1.5 bar) somehow can't be... and they can't be verified in VAGCOM logs either. icon_question.gif

I'll check that out right away.

Best regards,
Bernd

Hi Bernd,

I would appreciate it if a few other people could chime in, but I think we've found your problem.

Quote:

I have also already modified nozzles for an AGR system and had them adjusted. In doing so, there was a noticeable pressure difference. For the AFN system, the "wear limit" is set at an opening pressure of 170 bar! I bet your ASV nozzles aren't far off, and you have about 30 bar more opening pressure for the pre-injection compared to the AFN/AHF.

See you later.

Thomas.

Hello.

I would also appreciate it if others could confirm this.
If that's really the problem, then that would be a good thing.

I still can't imagine, no matter how hard I try, why the opening pressure would have been changed by the other nozzle inserts.

What is the cost of having the opening pressure adjusted at a Bosch service center?

Hi,

The holes are larger, and it's easier to push something through larger holes than through smaller ones. The shims in the nozzle holders have different thicknesses.

My Bosch service center charges around 50 euros for the installation.
It sometimes takes a while, especially when the Bosch employee can't find the adjustment shims.
The clock is still ticking, though. Well. icon_rolleyes.gif

See you later.
Greetings.
Thomas.

PS: I would still investigate the idea of sealing the AGR valve.
Perhaps don't adjust both at the same time, so you can see the effect of each change. Also, if you're not yet familiar with the relationship between injection quantity, pump cover position, and injector pump alignment, it's really worth reading some technical articles about it. That will definitely help you.

Thank you, Thomas.

I appreciate that many people here are willing to help others, even those who may only have a basic understanding of the topic, and that they clearly put a lot of effort into it. I also really enjoy reading the technical articles, as they are very well-written. What I find frustrating is when the only response you get is something like "=> Technical article" and nothing else, because those articles don't always explain the problem either.

So, if it's really true that I adjusted the opening pressure by changing the injector nozzles, and that's why the Russians are coming, then I'll probably have to go to a Bosch service center and have them readjust it.

Best regards,
Bernd

Hi Bernd,

"I have to agree with Thomas. The nozzles need to be precisely adjusted. Furthermore, I don't believe in disassembling a dual-nozzle holder and reassembling it later (without workshop equipment, a nozzle testing device, etc.). In most cases, this goes wrong and often results in problems." Just like with you.

Hi,

Imagine you have a forum. You answer a question, the problem is solved, and then the same question pops up five more times. You think, "Okay, I'll just add a search function." That way, everyone can search through the old posts based on their criteria. But the same questions still appear, and even more frequently than before. Then, you (or someone else) write a whole article about it and provide it to users for FREE! But nobody cares, nobody reads it, and the questions keep coming. Just ask someone here what a sports air filter does, or whether an OEM air filter is better than an aftermarket air filter. This is one of those questions that you're sure to quickly make friends with here. icon_wink.gif

(@Rainer - Did I get that about right?)

I find the technical articles unbeatable for a very simple reason: some authors always strive to keep the articles up-to-date, and corrections are always requested. This means that no one really has the right to complain about the articles, because improvements are welcome. So, either people are too lazy to respond, or they simply don't know any better. The articles contain everything you need to know. However, a certain level of basic knowledge is naturally assumed.

I've seen so many times in other forums how users tear this forum apart because people get banned for being rude, and they always feel like they're being insulted with phrases like "The search function is your friend" or "--> Read the articles," but no one sees what's really behind it. Why should the author of "-->Fachartikel" repeat all that nonsense again, when everything is already explained in the article?
If there are any questions remaining after reading the article, I have never encountered a situation where anyone was criticized or reprimanded simply for not understanding something.

I read a lot more than I write here, simply because there are so many people here who don't just pursue this topic as a hobby, but because some of them actually make a living from it and simply know exactly what they're talking about.
But whenever I had a question, it was ALWAYS answered in a satisfactory way!

Okay, but this is definitely not meant to be an attack on you or your problem.
It's just my opinion on such sentences.

Quote:
What I find stupid is when the answer is always just something like "=> Fachartikel" and nothing else - because they don't always explain the problem.

Because it's best to read first and then write your answer to open-ended questions! Usually, everyone benefits from that. Otherwise, it often comes across as know-it-all and arrogant! But it's just a feeling of being fed up with the laziness of some people. (And I'm not talking about you, of course!)
Technical articles never really explain the problem. They provide you with the connections and the necessary knowledge to eliminate your problem. The best solution is always experience.

Sorry for this epic length! I've often wanted to say something like that, but usually Rainer would close the thread before I could add my comments. icon_lol.gif

Again, this is less about you; there are other candidates.
Normally, I don't really care, since it's not my forum, but as a user...
I often search here and frequently come across nonsense that, in my opinion, should simply be deleted. It stops progress, wastes time, and ultimately achieves nothing.

And if someone tells me again: "This is a crappy forum...", --> Thread ... icon_twisted.gif

Okay, that's enough off-topic discussion for now. Back to the topic.
If no one else comments and you adjust the opening pressure, please let me know if it was due to that!

Otherwise, try adjusting the AGR valve, experiment with adaptations, and check the VAG-Com log file!

See you later.
Greetings.
Thomas.
