Two weeks ago, I measured the power consumption of all the H7 bulbs available in the assortment at the friendly parts dealer using a stabilized 13.8 V power supply. The values varied quite a bit. If there is interest, I would post the results tomorrow.
I find it interesting -> please post!

Yes, that's interesting indeed.
"...the other values don't necessarily have to improve automatically just because the power consumption is lower, and neither does the lifespan."
I just wanted to point out that many things are subjective... bright, warm, good - everything is relative.
Of course, besides the shelf life!

"Ulf: However, we have almost exclusively measured these "Super Blue Xenon" lamps. This is mainly because they are the most popular and are sold in large quantities. We also included some standard series from Narva and Osram."

I have the details at home, but the measured results, when converted, were between 60 and 85 watts. And all of this with an E-mark and printed "55W". icon_wink.gif

No wonder, considering that the 55W are converted at a nominal voltage of 12V.

The amount of additional power that can be achieved at 13.8V is not standardized and cannot be calculated, as the filament exhibits a strong positive temperature coefficient (PTC) characteristic and therefore cannot be considered a simple resistor.

Regards,
Sure.

I also see it that way; it's pure "You there, Ohm, just do whatever your Volt law says" icon_biggrin.gif.

Sure, the performance specifications are calculated based on 12V. However, I believe that the voltage of the vehicle's electrical system in modern cars typically ranges between 13.8 and 14.6V. Therefore, my measurement at 13.8V is quite practical and relevant for actual use in our vehicles.

Under the same environmental conditions (stable operating voltage, identical test conditions, etc.), the measurement results can be compared with each other. If anyone is still interested, I will post my measurement results this afternoon, or I can refrain from doing so if there is no interest.

So, that didn't work out either: The Normfest budget H7 bulb is an "Amolight," which sounds like it's from East Asia.

Okay, here are the measurement results at 13.8V! The lamps were switched on while cold, and I left them running for about 1 minute because the inrush current only decreased to a "normal level" after approximately 30 seconds.

Manufacturer -> Product Name -> Measured Power Consumption -> Calculated Wattage (rounded)

Litech - H7 - 5.4A = 75W (without the CE marking).
Hee Jin - H7 - 6.2A = 86W (with E 13 approval mark!!!)
AMA - H7 "Lifetime" - 4.9A = 68W (with E 13 approval mark)
AMA - H7 "Four Seasons" - 5.3A = 73W (without the European E-mark).
Dawaoo - "Blue Laser Light H7" - 4.7A = 65W (without E-mark approval).
Eufab - "White Laser Light H7" - 4.6 A = 64 W (with E 13 approval mark)
Eufab - "Blue Laser Light H7" - 4.8A = 66W (with ECE approval mark E 13).

Osram - "H7 Super" - 4.2 Amps = 58 Watts (with E mark approval).
Philips - "H7 Premium" - 4.3A = 59W (with E mark approval).
Narva - "H7 Range Power" - 4.4A = 60W (ECE R1 approval mark).

Den absoluten Vogel schoß allerdings eine Schachtel mit Lampen ab, die ich nachmittags erst erhielt und unter identischen Bedingungen nachgemessen.
Hua Xing - "H7 Skyblue" - 8.1 A = 112 W

The lamps have a tinted glass bulb with a blue/purple interference coating and the embossed indication: 55 W, as well as an E 19 test mark... Does the E 19 even exist?? icon_wink.gif The light distribution in the Golf IV headlight is flawless and precise. The light is dazzlingly bright and bluish-white, creating a narrow purple line at the light/dark boundary.

On the company premises, we tested them briefly in the dark. The unanimous opinion: Visually closer to real xenon light than anything we have seen so far. In particular, the narrow purple area makes it look authentic. A great "Wow" effect and the certainty of being stylish with these during every inspection. Apart from that, these bulbs produced an ape-like amount of heat. Hey everyone,

"Just now, my second H7 Osram Silverstar bulb from the year 2004 burned out. When I turned it on, there was a bright flash of light, and then the filament fell to the bottom of the housing. A piece of it is even stuck to the glass."

Here's why I'm chiming in again: Osram, to be honest, includes a well-hidden note on the packaging regarding the reduced lifespan of this "+50%" lamp...

How many kilometers have you driven with it, and how would you describe your lighting usage habits (e.g., always using headlights, etc.)?

Hi,

I just found the invoice - it's not from 2004, but from 03/2006 icon_redface.gif. One lamp from the set stopped working in April 2007 and went to the great scrapyard in the sky, and the second one broke today.

For the first 13 months, the mileage was approximately 16,000 km per year (which is 17,300 km).
And for the second one, exactly 21 months (which is 28,000 kilometers).

I frequently use lights on my commute to work because of the large underground parking garage at my company and the highway. The excellent light output is definitely worth the extra cost, and I will likely buy them again. They cost €27 per pair. And I can already change them without even looking icon_biggrin.gif.

What might be the reason for the quite different lifespans of these lamps? Based on my experience, when I installed pairs of new lamps of the same type, they tended to fail around the same time. If one broke down, the other usually failed a few weeks later.

I once used the Silverstar as an H4 bulb in a previous vehicle. The light output was really great, but I was somewhat disappointed with the lifespan of 10 or 11 months. However, that corresponded to a total mileage of 25,000 km during that time. Given the high price, I decided not to buy them again and just installed standard bulbs instead.

I always use lights whenever I deem it necessary, or when darkness, weather conditions, or the route require it. During the winter months, at least part of my commute (28 km each way) requires me to use lights. It's dark during my early morning shift and when I return home after a late shift.

I generally ride with my lights on for a roughly 8 km section of road that has many curves and runs through a densely wooded area. This is because it's very dangerous, and despite the limited visibility, people often exceed the speed limit (70 km/h, but usually driven at 100+ km/h) and illegally overtake other vehicles. Otherwise, the only place where using lights is necessary is in the tunnel at Berlin-Tegel Airport (which has been closed for construction work for a long time), and I also use my lights in the parking garage at the airport. If it's raining, foggy, or there are dark clouds, I keep my lights on for the entire journey. However, I object to constantly riding with lights on (e.g., even in bright sunshine). This reduces the visibility of cyclists, pedestrians, and motorcyclists, and I consider it a serious mistake.

Roger, the Philips NightGuide bulbs, which are roughly the same price, might also appeal to you in terms of light output. I actually found them to be slightly brighter than the Osram Silverstar bulbs when I compared them directly (installed in a Golf 4). However, I don't know how long they last.
