As has been discussed many times, there are 115 HP TDI engines with both 285 Nm and 310 Nm of torque.
I'd be interested to know how they limit the torque. I imagine they might have implemented that in the motor control unit (MCU).
If that's the case, shouldn't it be possible to reprogram it, right?
Best regards,
Uwe

Nicely spotted.
This "reprogramming" is called chip tuning.
With VAG-COM, you can even see the values in plain text on your AJM engine.
I hope the AJM is already torque-controlled and not quantity-controlled like my 1Z .

. . . from which the internal motor losses must be subtracted.
Therefore, when reading the data at full throttle, for example, in the area of the Nm maximum, the values obtained are generally higher than those stated in the brochures. Gruß Ulf

Unfortunately, not. Torque-based control is only implemented starting with EDC16 (e.g., 2.0 TDI).

Thank you for the correction, Rudi .
Can you actually calculate the torques across the VP (vertical plane) and PD (polar diameter) using a proportion, if you know one of them? Of course, this is under the assumption that the crankshaft geometry of the engines is the same (which it is, or is it?).
Okay, so my 1Z engine has a maximum torque of 202 Nm, which is regulated by the EDC system at 35.2 mg/H.
This would result in 40.9 mg/H for an AFN engine (235 Nm).
The 310 Nm of torque from the Ulf ASZ should be achievable with a fuel consumption of 54 mg/H.
(But I'm thinking of somewhat higher values.)
Therefore, the 285 or 310 Nm torque values should be clearly visible on the AJM!?!?

(but I have some higher values | floating around in my mind).
Yes, according to the log, it's approximately 55.5 mg.
If you reduce the torque to 285 Nm, you'll be in the range of 51 mg.
And approximately 51 or 55 mg should be clearly visible in the log (torque limitation!). Gruß Ulf

"I was wondering if I could tell the engine control unit (ECU) that I now have a 6-speed transmission installed, and if that would allow it to output 310 Nm of torque instead of the 285 Nm it currently outputs with the 5-speed transmission, while maintaining the same overall power."

Yes, you can.
Read the data from the EEPROMs and write new values into them – basically, chip tuning.
It's unlikely that something like that would happen simply through coding; VW doesn't usually offer such "gifts."

wofuer ?? For chipping?
Ask *** or ********.
Are you sure about what you're planning to do? Have you ever opened a motorcycle engine control unit and desoldered the chips?

Why not? It can be done with any soldering iron from a hardware store.

...and yet, there seem to be some that do - like my AJM TDI - which have the 5-speed gearbox but not 285 Nm of torque, but 315 Nm.

diselmartin is right.
This would be the very first AJM engine with a standard torque output of 315 Nm. There is only one other 4-cylinder TDI engine in the Golf that has more torque than the ASZ (310 Nm), namely the ARL, which has 320 Nm.

Hi, instead of starting a new thread, I'll ask my question here, as it's very relevant to the topic. I'm wondering, how much Nm can the 5-speed and 6-speed transmissions handle? I also have an AJM engine and plan to have it tuned by *** in the next few days. Mine has a 5-speed manual transmission and a standard torque of 285 Nm. After the chip tuning, it should be around 340 Nm. To be honest, I think that's a bit too much, but what can you do. The people at *** know what they're doing. They also say that you should change the transmission oil every 30,000 km after the tuning.
Other tuners advertise values of over 350 Nm and don't mention anything about the transmission. I'm just going to say that if you have an Audi/VW and want to get it tuned, *** is probably the best place to go. The advertised values never exceed the limits and, I think, don't exceed the engine's reserves. The only downside is that the price is extremely high, but that's something you're used to with premium tuners.

The specified values never exceed the limits and, I believe, do not exceed the engine's reserves.
And with that, you're contradicting yourself...
