The needle lift sensor, abbreviated as NHG or also known as NBF (needle movement sensor), is installed in TDI engines with a distributor injection pump. It is designated as part number G80 in the wiring diagram.
The function of the needle lift sensor is to report the actual injection start time to the engine control unit (ECU), so that the ECU can adjust the actual value to match the desired injection start time. The engine control unit (ECU) can adjust the injection timing, for example, on a Bosch VP37 fuel injection pump using Pulse Width Modulation (PWM). This adjustment is achieved hydraulically via the internal pressure of the pump. You can find details about the VP37 here: https://community.dieselschrauber.org/en/viewtopic.php?t=5517 The needle lift injector is essentially comparable to a normal nozzle holder assembly; the only difference lies in an "extension" of the injection nozzle's needle and a coil into which the tip of the needle dips during movement. As soon as the nozzle needle of the injector opens, its movement is mechanically transmitted to the actual sensing needle, which extends into the coil, via various pressure pieces. By immersing the iron probe into the coil, its inductance changes, which can be detected by a test current from the engine control unit. In four-cylinder engines such as the AHF, ALH, and AFN models, the third injector holder configuration uses a needle lift sensor. This means that the injection timing is measured at only one of the four fuel injectors. For this reason, it is also important that the nozzle opening pressures of the individual nozzle holder combinations are relatively equal. Failures in the needle lift transducer are usually caused by short circuits or interruptions in the measuring coil, or by loose connections and wear on the connecting cable. Permanently defective coils or connections can be identified by measuring the resistance with a multimeter; the normal resistance is approximately 100 ohms and varies by about +/- 15 ohms depending on the specific design. Unfortunately, electrical resistance measurements are not sufficient for assessing functionality. Short circuits or loose connections within the coil often only become noticeable sporadically during operation, which is why error messages in the engine control unit (e.g., readable with VCDS) provide more meaningful information in these cases. If the engine is idling at approximately 3000 rpm and you tap the sensor coil with, for example, the handle of a screwdriver, any hesitation in the engine's running indicates a faulty needle valve lifter. Conversely, if there are no hesitations when tapping, it does not guarantee proper function.
