Engine Noise: Causes and Solutions

My ALH-TDI engine has been sounding different today. It's making a whining noise from approximately 1100 RPM to around 1800 RPM and is generally louder overall. It's not quite as noticeable when the car is stationary, but it's much more pronounced while driving.
However, there were no particular incidents that would suggest any damage; I just had the winter tires put on today.
Mileage currently at 25,000 km. Who can help?

Describing sounds in text is difficult; even more challenging is to guess the cause of the sound from the description alone.
Therefore, I can only give you two tips right now.
- Leaks in the intercooler pipes cause whistling or hissing noises (for example, you might hear the turbocharger "whooshing" louder than usual).
- Squeaking noises can be caused by slipping belts.

I've been able to narrow down the problem a bit more now:
The whining sound is already faintly present at idle, but becomes louder from around 1200 RPM. It disappears again starting at approximately 1700 RPM. The noise occurs under both partial and full load conditions. It cannot be reproduced at its full intensity when the engine is not engaged (neither stationary nor while driving), nor without being in gear. It sounds like a 'U' tone at around 350 Hz.
I've heard this noise before; about half a year ago, the engine was realigned, and the noise went away. Based on the direction it seems to be coming from, I suspect either the air filter housing or the flexible pipe (roughly). Following Rainer's suggestion, I checked all the hoses, but everything seems okay there! The car is a Golf IV, 66kW ALH engine, with 25,000 km on the odometer, first registered in May 2001.
I would appreciate any suggestions! (Could it also be related to a serpentine belt or water pump?)

On which side of the engine is the noise coming from?
transmission side?? belt side??
You're talking about the air filter, then the water pump belt?
Could you please describe more precisely from which area in the engine compartment the noise is coming?
