Hello fellow diesel enthusiasts,
Now that the Green Party is significantly increasing fuel prices, I'm considering adding some Aldi vegetable oil to my AFN 110PS (with a 140PS module) to see if it helps.
I was thinking something like 40 liters of diesel, 20 liters of salad oil... which means a ratio of 33.3% alcohol.
Is this advisable...? And if not, should one take a smaller amount? 20% salad oil, etc.?
I would appreciate both positive and negative feedback.
Please share your experiences, problems, etc.
'Of course, I would mix less during the winter months (due to increased viscosity and potential crystallization, etc.).'
Thank you very much.
Carsten.

Hi,
Although I am also a fan of alternative fuels, I would advise against using them. As far as I know, the main problem is that unburned or incompletely burned components can enter the engine oil and cause it to saponify. A well-known car mechanic told me about engine oils that became almost gel-like and clumpy as a result. The effects are likely to be minimized with regular oil checks and, preferably, long-distance driving with few cold starts. However, since the turbocharger places higher demands on oil quality, I would avoid using vegetable oil.
As far as I know, AUTO-BILD once conducted a long-term test with a Golf 2. Unfortunately, I don't know the results of that test. Maybe you could ask them about it.
My wife used to drive a Seat Cordoba 1.9 D for a while with oil from ALDI (a rapeseed oil brand). The engine ran quite well with it, but unfortunately, she then had an accident and the car was totaled, so there was no opportunity to change the oil.
I own a G4 with an ALH engine and I mostly run it on biodiesel (which is about 10-15 cents cheaper than diesel here). The engine has a variable service interval, and it's only now, at 39,000 km, that it needs a new oil change for the first time.
Let's see what the workshop says...
Regards,
Eike.

Well, I wouldn't do it either, aside from potential problems with seals or that oil issue... but it's really complicated, isn't it?
I go to the gas station twice a week to fill up 50 liters of diesel. So, I have to buy 100 liters of salad oil from Aldi every week (in 2-liter bottles!?) and then pour it into the tank using a funnel.
To be honest, that's too complicated for me!
Sure, here's the translation:

I think the problem is more likely with the fuel injection pump. Since vegetable oil is thicker, it can cause problems with the pump and the injectors, especially when the engine is cold. This can range from minor issues to a complete pump failure. Older diesel engines with swirl chambers tend to handle this better due to the lower injection pressures. Gruß Bertil

Hello,
According to various posts in the FattyFuels forum, it is possible for fuel to leak into the engine oil of VE-TDIs during short-distance driving due to poor atomization during fuel injection.
This will then undergo chemical changes that impair its lubricating properties and can lead to blockages in the oil channels. Reports have been received of sticky, viscous substances.
It's not straightforward; without modifications like fuel preheating, you'll likely have problems.
Background: I'm considering adding rapeseed oil to my diesel fuel because my commute is about to increase to 60 km per day, and unfortunately, the Green party has won the election again.
Here's a link to a salad oil test performed by a VE-TDI driver.

Hi,
I followed the salad oil test conducted by Auto Bild across various issues.
They used a very old Golf II GTD for that.
So, the problems back then were so diverse that I can't even begin to list them all...
Basically, it worked, but:
- Cold start failure due to solidified vegetable oil (winter is coming).
- Subsequently, installation of a fuel-powered heater.
- Small supermarkets that were unwilling to dispense more than 10 liters.
- Later, there were also problems with the ESP (I think).
For frequent users, this alternative is more of a hassle. Just the thought of having 50 empty bottles lying around every few days...
Also, you also have to consider the current price of vegetable oil – is it even worth it?

Dann stIt doesn't matter.
Otherwise, for a good starting point among the "newer injection systems," I would recommend PD engines for operation with rapeseed oil (RME), as the injection system is very robust and the oil is preheated very quickly due to its proximity to the engine block.
For drivers who travel short distances (under 20 km), it's not a good idea, as the increased wear outweighs any benefits. For longer distances, it's a viable alternative. However, I wouldn't recommend using a plug-in hybrid car with a high percentage of electric power in the winter (100% is fine in the summer). When it's freezing, you should limit the electric power to 10-20%. Even if you start with a higher percentage, the increased wear due to the greater forces required in cold conditions, as well as incomplete combustion and fuel savings, don't justify it.
I would be very cautious with cars that have a distributor injection pump. These pumps can easily fail in cars that haven't been modified (i.e., without a preheating system) because cold oil, which is still quite viscous, always flows through them.
When it comes to Common Rail systems, I would definitely advise against using that particular product.
I'm happy to answer questions (to the best of my ability), but otherwise, I'll also refer you to the forums mentioned. However, those forums mainly focus on older cars. For PD engines, there are also some people with experience at www.2literauto.de.
Regards,
Olaf.
P.S.
Regarding oil dilution, I've never had any issues with my AMF 1.4 PD, and I don't know anyone else with a Lupo 3L who has experienced that problem. However, it seems to be more of an issue with older cars. Generally speaking, cold starts are the problem. In the first few minutes, it's especially important to avoid revving the engine too high, as this can create extremely high pressures in the injection system when cold oil is present.
