AE vs. M: Comparing 038 906 018 and 038 906 012

Hello,
What is the difference between the two ALH control units?
Are there any hardware differences between models 038 906 018 AE and 038 906 012 M, or are the differences only in the software or data version?
For the ALH engine, there are 3 data versions available. Does the one with the highest number always represent the most current version?

Hi,

The hardware between the control units you mentioned is different, and so is the software.
The AE has 2xPLCC32 (PROM, which can be modified using a soldering iron), while the M has a PSOP44 (FLASH) memory chip that can be modified using a flashing tool.
The connections to the wiring harness are completely different as well.

Yes, the numbers of the software versions are in ascending order.

Hello,
I would like to update my MSG (Engine Control Unit) to the latest software version using the data set 2140 (which I also have as a hex file). However, I'm not sure if this data set is compatible with my MSG, which has the part number 038 906 018 AE, or if it's intended for a different MSG with the part number ...012 M.
If the software is compatible with my MSG, can I simply burn two suitable PROMs with the software, solder them in, install the MSG, and that's it, or do I need to make any adjustments or modifications?
