Hi.
Approximately how much power does the clutch transmit before it starts to slip?
Can the transmission handle approximately 350 Nm of torque? Is that correct? I seem to recall reading that somewhere... (5th gear).
I've been searching, but I haven't found anything useful, or maybe I'm just not searching correctly.

I've heard values of around 400 Nm. From that point on, the standard clutch should be completely overwhelmed. Sachs is supposed to offer one (organic) that can handle approximately 460 Nm.

Hello,
If I'm reading these tables correctly, the AFN is an 81 kW engine with a VP 37 injection pump. This means it's one of the 'older generation' diesel engines, and therefore it will also have the 'older' type of gearbox.
These are durable, but they can only withstand a maximum torque of 280 Nm.
PD transmissions are designed for a continuous torque of 350 Nm.
You can, of course, put more stress on it for short periods or by reducing the mileage, but these are the specified limits set by VAG. However, the differentials usually fail before the transmission breaks.
The clutch needs to withstand 350 Nm of torque. Tuned AZV engines often have clutch problems if they produce more than 380 Nm, and many people switch to the Sachs Sport clutch mentioned above.
Best regards, Jochen.

What prevents the CPC transmission from the AHU/1Z engine? Also, is it rated for 280 Nm? A4 Limu 07/96 AHU@110PS 192tkm 08/05-05/08

Most chip tuners achieve approximately 140 horsepower and 290 Nm of torque with just a chip modification on the standard AFN engine.
Level 1 with the 0.216 injectors, producing 150 hp and 310 Nm of torque, and then adding the VNT17 turbocharger . That should result in around 160 hp. Now the question is how much the clutch can handle before it starts to slip ... 320 Nm!?
Here are some optimized AFNs (presumably referring to a specific type of technology or product) in the forum...

Okay, so I have, among other things, a modified AHU engine with 305 Nm of torque at 2030 rpm.
I know that my gearbox is being operated beyond its maximum continuous load rating.
What's important here is:
The maximum continuous load is 100% of the maximum moment.
However, under normal driving conditions, you will likely only experience the maximum torque for about 5% of the time. Therefore, it is possible to temporarily operate the transmission under overload conditions.
That is also the reasoning given by the tuners.
As far as I know, all the older TDI transmissions are designed to handle 280 Nm of torque.
Therefore, the 81 kW version only has 234 Nm. *** tunt very sampft im Gerantie 260 Nm -> why only?
All PD models have different transmissions, which are supposed to handle 350 Nm of torque.
Best regards, Jochen.

It can withstand quite a bit more. It's certainly understandable that it might not be good for the material. Attached is a discussion among professionals. More information can also be found on the board there.

Hi,
As someone who frequently experiences clutch problems, I feel compelled to speak up here.
You are talking about extremely high durability values for the clutch and transmission, which these components simply cannot withstand.
The 228mm clutch for my AXR is the largest 5-speed clutch designed for transverse installation. It is specified for a continuous load of up to 250Nm (Sachs standard... it can handle even more in peak loads). For more demanding applications, SRE offers 228mm clutches with a durability rating of 300, 350, or 400Nm. This kit includes a pressure plate and a clutch disc.
I believe the claim that the smaller clutches in the 5-speed VP engines are more durable is a rumor.
By the way, the AXR (+ATD) engine has been "detuned" to 240 Nm for transverse installation. In longitudinal installation (e.g., in a Passat), the 74 kW engine produces 250 Nm.
According to my information, the 5-speed manual transmissions are designed for a torque output of 280 (290) Nm, while the 6-speed transmissions are designed for 350 Nm. This applies regardless of whether it's a PD or a VP engine connected to it.
These are supposed to be continuous loads, and I have no information about the maximum (short-term) peak loads.
I recently had the opportunity to replace the transmission in another standard 81kW TDI engine that had significant wear and tear (it wasn't the first time). Gruß Bertil

Hello Bertil.
Hi,
According to my information, the 5-speed gearbox is designed for a torque of 280 (290) Nm, while the 6-speed gearbox is designed for 350 Nm. This applies regardless of whether it's connected to a PD or a VP engine.
These are supposed to be continuous loads, and I have no information about the maximum (short-term) peak loads.
That pretty much aligns with the information I have.
Therefore, I believe we are on the right track here.
PD models should actually have stronger transmissions, because in the A3, you can get the AZV engine with a 5-speed gearbox. And putting 310 Nm (or was it slightly less?) onto a standard gearbox designed for 280 Nm is probably more than just grossly negligent.
I'm quite sure that there were also gearboxes with a torque capacity of up to 350 Nm here, but I can confirm that on Monday, as these engines, including the gearboxes, were on our test benches.
You're right about the clutches: If the transmission can only handle 'just' 280 Nm, no one will install a clutch that can handle more than 300 Nm. It's better for the clutch to fail first, as it's cheaper and anyway just a wear item.
Best regards, Jochen.

Actually, yes, but the "smaller" PD models (74+85 kW) with a 5-speed gearbox don't have better gearboxes. At least, not for the G4 platform.

AZV?
"That's not available on the 4-cylinder platform. That would be the G5 platform. For that, there are new, "larger" 5-speed transmissions and stronger clutches. There might be a 350 with a 5-speed. Unfortunately, I don't have any accurate information about that yet."

That's the way it should be.
Please provide the text you would like me to translate from German to English.
Upon rereading the original post, I see that it's about an A4. That car has a longitudinal engine. Therefore, there should be significantly more potential in terms of transmission strength. "mullemaus" probably knows more about this .
Sorry, my mistake. Gruß Bertil
