Hello everyone,
In my company, there is currently a heated discussion:

My claim:
A McPherson front suspension consists of a lower control arm and a strut, which is fixedly connected to the wheel hub housing. The shock absorber, or suspension strut, controls the wheel's movement.
In contrast, in multi-link axles, the shock absorber is used as a pivot rod and does not have a wheel-leading function.
_______

The Counterparty:
McPherson is the principle of constructing a suspension system with the spring surrounding the shock absorber. Therefore, the 3-series Golf also has a rear axle according to the McPserson principle.
_______

All the McPherson examples I have seen unfortunately all have the spring around the shock.
_______

Now, a more serious case:
What kind of front axle does a 190 Mercedes have? Here, the shock absorbers are separate from the springs, but the shock absorbers are directly connected to the wheel. This is actually how it is on the front of the 3 series Golf, except that the spring is located next to the shock absorber directly on the control arm. Is this also a McPherson?

Thank you,
Martin

That's exactly it. See here: http://v3.espacenet.com/textdoc?DB=EPODOC&IDX=GB658387&F=0

All other constructions where the shock absorber/strut unit does not have a wheel-leading function are, in my opinion, not classic McPherson suspensions.
