Post14-09-2006, 23:29    Subject: Ibiza 96kW: Lack of Power / Performance Issues Quote

Hi,
"My Ibiza (6L, 2003, 80,000 km) has been lacking power recently. The acceleration is worse, and I'm not reaching the top speed (207 km/h, as registered). When going downhill, I can barely exceed 200 km/h on the speedometer. The air filter and oil were changed 3000 km ago."

I've read the instructions on this page (diagnosing power loss with VAG-COM), but I still don't understand them, especially the part about comparing measured values. The boost pressure seems okay (as far as I can tell)... but I haven't been able to figure out anything about the fuel/injection quantity limitations.

I would really appreciate it if someone could take a quick look at the log files to see if there are any anomalies.

"Also, at this point as well, please provide a full-load log (see FA). The RPM is fluctuating, as if you weren't consistently applying full throttle. I didn't investigate further because of that."

Fuel injection quantity limitation:
The lowest value indicates the limit. This must not be the soot limit.

Replace the diesel filter! And as mentioned before: use the "vollast log" diagnostic log instead of fault code MWB 9, and select option 3 due to the mass airflow sensor (MAF). Best regards.

Hi, thanks for the replies!

Mr. Antje: A full-throttle log? So, running at full speed in 5th gear until the maximum speed? Unfortunately, I can't do that, as there's a speed limit of 130 km/h. In the log, I shifted from 3rd to 4th gear twice. I won't be in Germany for another 2-3 weeks, which is when I'll be able to fully test the car.

benje2: Do you have any idea how often the diesel filter is replaced during service intervals? Every 15,000/30,000 km?

For understanding:
IQ driver's req = Desired fuel injection amount?
IQ via rpm(Torq) = current fuel injection amount?

No, that's the amount of fuel injected, which is determined by the torque limit. At higher speeds, or when the turbocharger has built up its pressure, this value should limit the fuel injection amount, not the air mass.

It's typically every 60,000 km or 90,000 km, but if you have or have had solid particles in your diesel fuel, it might need to be replaced sooner. Also, if you ever run the tank completely empty, it can become clogged.
The full-throttle logs show activity in the 3rd and 4th gears, roughly between 2500 and 3500 RPM. Please post the new logs.

Hi,

I was just messing around in the engine compartment and noticed an oil leak on the hose that runs from the intercooler to the turbo (?). The hose also wobbles slightly and seems loose, but I can't pull it off.

As far as I know, the diesel filter has never been replaced. I haven't found anything like that in the invoices... I'll get it replaced next week (or have it replaced).

Sure, here is the translation of the text from German to English:

"Two more anatomy questions:"
Is the diesel filter located to the right of the oil leak?
Is the AGR valve located above this hose, before the bend?

I'll probably create a new log entry tonight and post it as soon as possible.

In the picture, the diesel filter is located on the left side, but when viewed from the direction of travel, it is on the right.

Based on what I'm seeing, I strongly suspect that the seal on the turbocharger hose at the connection is damaged. This is causing a pressure/air leak, which can lead to a loss of power under higher load or cause the car to produce excessive soot. You can disconnect the hose connection by releasing it with the metal clamp (by pulling). However, be careful not to let any remnants of the seal fall into the intake pipe... Or, it's best to go to a workshop right away. You should definitely get this repaired quickly because the turbocharger is trying to compensate for the pressure loss by increasing its speed. This is not good for its lifespan.
You can also observe how much boost you get while the car is stationary and the engine is running at full throttle. You won't achieve the full boost pressure in that situation, but it can still give you a rough idea.
Also, something else: The drive belt of the alternator looks like it might be rubbing against something. Please check that as well.

Hi!
Thank you for the reply. I just took the part apart, and the seal seems to be okay, but it's very delicate. The whole assembly seems a bit wobbly, and the tube underneath also wobbles slightly, but unfortunately, I can't access it.

I've cleaned everything and reassembled it. I'll check later to see if I notice anything, but I think the leak probably existed for several thousand kilometers. I just recently took over the car from my father, and I only drove it rarely before.

I have to go to the doctor tomorrow anyway, so I'll see what he says. It's probably something like "it's normal" and "no reason to worry" ... icon_confused.gif

Thank you in advance, Tom.

Hi,

In certain areas, the target boost pressure is below the normal values specified in the software. Additionally, the maximum value recorded in module 9, starting at timestamp 142 seconds, is below the torque limit, even though the opacity (smoke level) is still higher.
It's likely that your LLT (low-level trigger) is also rising to a high level (over 80°C), which could easily cause the MSG (message system) to initiate an emergency stop.

Please log the data while in 4th gear (preferably 5th gear), maintaining full throttle from 1500 to at least 4000 rpm, and record the values for sensors MWB 1, 7, and 8.

See also (as a likely parallel case).
Okay, I'm ready. Please provide the German text you want me to translate.
Gruß Ulf

These sealing plugs sometimes become noticeable due to leaks. As a result, Volkswagen introduced replacement seals with increased thickness.

The Seat parts department might already have the newer seals; it's worth asking specifically about them. When installing these, the locking clip must be completely unlocked, otherwise the (thicker) seal will be damaged immediately. These cost a little over 3 euros, which is definitely worth it. Moreover, the belt leading to the alternator has likely already been exposed to oil fumes.

"In my Golf's ASZ (auxiliary air system), the seal to the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve was similar and leaky, and this made the engine noticeably more tired, especially in the later stages."

@Ulf, thanks for the advice. I'll do the log today afternoon, but only in 4th gear, otherwise I risk getting too many points on my license.

Roger: Thanks, I'll mention the "Friendly Morning" service, but I'm not really confident they'll be helpful, as they don't seem to offer much beyond asking for a lot of money for simple inspections.

What do you actually mean by "Steckschellen"? Are you referring to those C-shaped metal clamps that are placed around the hose? They don't seem very secure; I was able to pry them off easily with a screwdriver... and I also managed to get them back on quite loosely afterwards.

Prying icon_eek.gif?

They are only pulled up about 5 mm to release them. Do not remove them completely! You might also want to replace the "loose" locking bar.

I think we're not talking about the same thing... I hope so. Because "you can't pull those things upwards; they have a kind of hook, which you have to pry out. I'd like to take a picture, but if I break anything else in the process... that would be stupid icon_sad.gif.

Where does the oil leak actually come from that's dripping out of the leaky hose?

"From the turbo? It can't be from the AGR valve, because that comes later!"

"I'd be interested to know."
