Hello,

My camshaft replacement is coming up. I have the original maintenance manual.
I would like to mentally prepare myself, but I don't always immediately understand the drawings. I'm not worried about the camshafts, but I am concerned about the timing belt.

Since many people here did the work themselves, I think a lot of photos were taken.

Could you please email me some nice detail photos? I already found these during my search http://www.ixix.at/motor.

If anyone has good instructions, feel free to send them to me.

Thank you in advance.

Rainer.

In your photos, it looks more like something resembling camshafts. icon_biggrin.gif

If you have all the necessary tools, like rulers and gauges, it shouldn't really be a problem! Overall, however, this is a procedure best suited for experienced engine mechanics.

Good luck.

Unfortunately, there are no photos, but the images look good. Maybe don't deconstruct it quite so much. I removed the cooler for the first time to have a "clear" view, but it's not necessary, and now I only do it when I'm in service mode.

"Erwin (siehe Fehlerdatenbank)'s guide was sufficient for me. For me, it was my first TDI, V6, and timing belt (other than the Nissan Micra), and I only had the guide."

Be careful with the Hydros; they are relatively fragile and sometimes even come with defects directly from the shelf at VW.

NW (needle valve), hydrometers, rocker arms, these shims (on the valve spring). Valve cover gasket, NW (needle valve) oil seal, seals where the NW rails go in, seals for the oil drain lines, the oil drain lines themselves, have the nozzles checked and replace them with new seals. Then I would replace all the belts, pulleys, and tensioning elements of the timing belt, along with these guide pulleys and water pump.

Hello!
Man, those photos always give me goosebumps. Why are various components crumbling or cracked? Are these the consequences of the camshaft damage?
I am unable to translate "haithamina" because it does not appear to be a word or phrase in the German language. It may be a misspelling, a proper noun, or a term from a specialized field. If you can provide more context or clarify the intended meaning, I would be happy to assist you with the translation.

It has nothing to do with the NW. He must have had an accident; I can't explain it any other way. For example, he has a dent on the radiator fan housing, torn mounting points for auxiliary components, etc.

Hello, first of all,

The photos are not mine. As I already mentioned, I found this link in another article. And this one is about a rear-end collision.
But the photos showed some nice details.

Thanks for the tips so far. I don't need Erwin (siehe Fehlerdatenbank), as I already have the book. However, I sometimes find photos to be more helpful. I already have the tools, including the camshaft and crankshaft locking devices. A drill is all that's needed for the pump. But do I need a counter-holder, or something else?

And anyone who took photos back then is welcome to send them to me.

Thank you.
Rainer.

You need a special tool to do this; otherwise, you'll have to tighten and loosen the north-west wheels, using them as a locking mechanism for the rails, which isn't ideal. You should also have a puller; the standard 2- or 3-arm pullers usually won't work. I've managed to do it once, but I wouldn't recommend it. For the service position, you can use two threaded rods.

Not everyone has this large Allen wrench and the key for the viscous fan. A curved key for the fuel injectors would also be useful. A 1/4" set is usually something you have on hand. You can build a tool to remove the ESD modules if you want to take them out.

It's best to secure all screws with Loctite.
