Hello!
Can this black plastic engine cover be easily installed retroactively? I have a 1994 TDI engine, model 1Z. I would like to retrofit this cover because it is supposed to make the engine quieter, is that correct? And what is the price of a new cover? Or does anyone have a similar part lying around that they would like to sell?
Sure, no problem!
Regards,
Thomas.

Hi,
I just did a quick listening test, and I couldn't hear any difference. In my opinion, the engine with the plastic cover looks slightly more elegant.
For fastening:
On the passenger side, a plastic clip is attached to a hose. On the driver's side, a rubber-mounted plastic plug is inserted into the hole of a metal bracket.
You'll need to check if this flap is present on your car (if necessary, take a look at a car that has the cover).
My cover - 1Z model year 1996 - has the part number 028 103 935 A B41 (and should cost between 15 and 20 TEURO, including plugs and clips).
Best regards, Rudi.

Hello Thomas, Rudi,
With my A3, the difference in sound whether the plastic cover is on or off is noticeable, but not significant.
For the price Rudi mentioned, I think it's worth considering an upgrade, but you shouldn't expect too much from it.
Best regards, Rainer.

However, as far as I know, the A3 already has the large cover (which also extends over the cylinder head). It's likely to be a significant improvement over the small cover that was originally installed on all 4-cylinder TDIs.

Hi,
The G3 cover is a piece of plastic without any insulation, while the G4 cover has a thick layer of insulation underneath the plastic. Some Audi A3 models also had covers like this. Only the covers with the insulation film actually provide real noise reduction. Gruß Bertil

Hi,
...and all of that is useless if the engine itself doesn't have insulation (an engine cover) on the bottom.
The G4 even has a plastic shell around the oil pan...

Eike.

Hi Bertil and everyone,
In the year 1997, the cladding already featured a fine-celled foam insert.
However, I'm not using it, because I like to hear the engine a bit more clearly. (And because I want my car to be as light as possible ).
However, the difference between a hooded version with insulation and a "bare" version is not significant. Gruß Ulf

Hi Eike,
The plastic container was already included in the 1997 Golf 3 (at least in the AFN model).
It's still attached to mine, as splash and rust protection for the oil pan . Gruß Ulf

Hi Ulf,
"My 1Z also had the same issue, but the lower cover on the Golf 4 looks like a cardboard egg carton and is padded. This cover is therefore designed to absorb sound. I believe the later Golf 3 models even had a top cover that was much larger and padded, similar to the ones on the G4 models." However, I mean that this cover doesn't easily fit on the older engines.
I drove my Porsche yesterday without the upper cover in place, just for testing purposes, and it made a terrible noise!! The PD elements can be clearly heard from the sound of the combustion (a loud, bright ticking). Gruß Bertil

Hi Bertil,
It becomes clear once again, at what cost the benefits of PD (presumably referring to a specific technology or process) were achieved: extreme material stress.
If components of a system are not specifically designed to "make noise" (like horns, etc.) and are still so clearly audible above the otherwise "normal" noise, then one can guess why a completely new generation of oil had to be developed specifically for PDs . Gruß Ulf

Hi,
It seems that these underbody panels underneath the engine are, once again, a weak point.
I often find myself driving behind Passats or Golfs where it looks like the trim is hanging down.
Either they come loose from their fastenings easily, or in the workshops we trust, they tend to forget to re-secure them properly...

The lower plastic trim pieces on my Passat were also hanging down. The problem, however, isn't the costumes themselves, but their poor attachments: They have these strange clamping nuts that you inevitably lose sooner or later .
