Hi.

I drove a VW T5 TDI with 174 horsepower and a DPF (possibly BPC??) over the weekend.

That part didn't even have an engine cover?!
The AXE (174 hp without filter) still had a...

Is that correct as it is, or was the car dealership afraid that the part would get damaged?

Okay, please provide the German text you would like me to translate into English. I will only provide the translation.

I don't have one either... what isn't there can't break. Besides, every gram counts!

Okay, it's a BPC.

That's probably right. There's nothing missing. Was it a transporter or a Multivan? Transporters usually don't have covers anymore anyway. And all of this is just for show, really...

It's an Atlantis, so it's not a transporter. No, for many vehicles, the "show" aspect is only marginal. Personal protection is the main reason, followed by acoustic and design considerations. However, the T5 doesn't really offer much in terms of personal protection, as there are at least 25cm between the hood and the engine...

In addition, the T5 has a very thick, foam-padded mat under the hood, unlike the thin textile remnants that were used in the G3 era.

In the demonstration area, a marten had already tested the taste of the mat icon_wink.gif.

m;

PS: Personal protection?? To prevent some clumsy mechanic from burning themselves or getting trapped in the undercarriage? But frankly, I wouldn't care much about that if I was already smashing the hood with my head.

It's more likely that pedestrians are being run over. It could make a difference whether there is a hard engine block under the relatively soft roof, or something even softer in between.

Best regards,

Yes, I meant pedestrian protection... even if the skull shatters against the windshield, the rest of the body shouldn't be further injured by the hard engine block.
Yes, the T5 has soft material in the engine cover.

Possibly there's another reason. The DPF is located very close to the area where the cover used to be... maybe it was damaged by heat from the grill before.

Jahhaahha, of course, this also applies to the T5... it's a lightweight construction using blocks. icon_cool.gif

Well?
In my BMR (presumably a vehicle), the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) is located closer to the cover, and unfortunately, it's positioned directly underneath, which isn't ideal from a thermal perspective.

On the BPC system, the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) is angled backwards.

Okay... You don't necessarily need a cover... mine is also in the shelf.

Okay, so my DPF extends from the engine at a 90-degree angle. The distance to the top of the valve cover is approximately 5 cm.

It was just a thought... Given how easy it is to maintain something like a T5, there's probably a good reason for that!

Funny.

The BPC we had here had a DPF (I believe it was the DPF, because otherwise a modern VW engine wouldn't have one) that ran at a 45-degree angle from the engine towards the rear and downwards.

Communication problem:

Looking vertically from the engine block at a 90-degree angle. 45 degrees horizontally (meaning tilted downwards; otherwise, it would end up in the cup holder compartment icon_smile.gif).

I would say we mean the same thing; there aren't that many differences.
