Hello,
I want to replace the engine control unit (ECU) in my Golf 4, specifically changing from part number 038 906 018 J to 038 906 018 BR. The "J" ECU is from my Golf (manufactured in 1997). I don't know what car the "BR" (produced in 04/2000) ECU came from, but I only know that it originates from an AHF engine.

I installed it yesterday and calibrated the WFS, but unfortunately, I'm getting an error message that isn't showing up in the error memory: "Control unit incorrectly coded."

Unfortunately, I don't know how to code this correctly. I've temporarily left the encoding as "00002", like it was for my previous ones.

Best regards.
markus

Sure, here is the translation of the text from German to English:

"ps."

This abbreviation stands for "postscript," which means "added as a thought or comment after the main body of a letter or email." It is often used to add information that was not included in the original message.
The purpose of replacing the control units is to make my car fully CAN-bus compatible.

Hello Marcus, my information suggests that this engine control unit (ECU) might be from a Skoda Octavia. The production period is approximately from 1997 to 2000. The part number is EDC 15V-5.36 0 281 001 850.

Possible encodings.

00001 automatic transmission
Manual transmission, front-wheel drive.
Manual transmission, all-wheel drive.

What is particularly special about it, I cannot tell you right now. icon_wink.gif Try coding it again using the existing code. If you do not have a manual transmission, use the correct code number. icon_wink.gif

Okay, I haven't tried that yet, but I'll give it a shot this weekend and report back here.

Hi Mulle,
I'm afraid you've gone astray somewhere icon_wink.gif.
The 018BR is an MSA15.7 and, according to the data available as of 2113, it has only one...
Shift pattern block for manual transmissions.

Best regards,
Rudi

In 2000, is that still an MSA? icon_eek.gif My 'smart program' always tells me EDC 15V-5.36 0 281 001 850 when I use the number 038 906 018 BR. icon_sad.gif Although the program has disappointed me several times before. icon_wink.gif

The (MSA15) things are countable icon_cool.gif.

038 906 018xy are all MSA15.7. The EDC15V models end with 012xy, and the EDC15P(+).
on 019xy.
However, this final digit assignment no longer applies to the T4/LT models, and also not to Audi vehicles.
that don't have a 1.9L engine (or that have an EDC16 system - things are different with EDC16 anyway).
It's all different anyway.

Best regards,
Rudi

Finally managed to do it today. After entering the code about 10 times, the system finally accepted it.
Thank you for your help.

Best regards.
Markus.

Now I'm facing a huge problem; the performance is much lower than expected.

The typical turbocharger boost now kicks in around 2200 RPM, whereas with the previous version, it started as low as 1700 RPM.

What could be the reason for that?
I reset the learning values and have now driven almost 150 km.

Best regards.

Are these control units actually flashable via OBD? It's not an EDC15, is it?

Other control parameters for the charger, possibly a less aggressive charging curve.

The parts do not have any learning values - really not at all!

Nothing can be done via OBD; you'll need a soldering iron.

Best regards,
Rudi

I thought that reading and writing to channel 0 with the adaptation (10) setting would delete learning values.

Can I customize this myself somehow?

But something must be completely wrong because it's missing a good 30-40 horsepower.

It's possible that the Skoda has other faulty sensors (e.g., MAF sensor) and that's why it's displaying an incorrect value, causing my car to be throttled.

It is. However, the older TDIs don't have any learning values icon_wink.gif.

Okay, good to know. Now I just need to figure out how, where, and what I can do to get the same performance as I had with the old MSG system.

Best regards.
Markus.

Can anyone tell me what car and engine the part number 038 906 018 BM is for?

"Does anyone know what type of EEPROMs are used in these control units, and what kind of package they are in (e.g., DIP, PLCC20, etc.)?"

Best regards.
Markus.

018BM is for a Volkswagen Golf IV with 110 horsepower.
EPROMs are two soldered 27C1001 chips in a PLCC32 package.

Best regards,
Rudi

Do you happen to know if they are 90ns or 120ns?

"110 horsepower sounds good; I'll just plug it in. Nothing can possibly go wrong, right?"

Best regards.
Markus.
