Hello everyone,

Do the functions of the old VAG testers find their way into VAG-Com in a relatively straightforward manner, or should one resort to older testers even for older cars?
Specifically: I need to perform the basic timing adjustment on my girlfriend's Passat (gasoline engine, year 1994, 2E, 115 hp). However, the original repair manual only mentions the VAG 1551. Can I also perform this adjustment using VAG-Com in a similar way?

Thank you very much for your efforts!
Stefan.

Hello dieselmartin,

Thank you for the table! It compares VAG-COM with VAS-505x. Does that correspond to 1551? Unfortunately, I still can't determine from here whether the required function is included. icon_sad.gif

Best regards,
Stefan.

Hello Stefan,

Your question is easy to answer. If the diagnostic process for an older car uses either the 2x2 connector or the 16-pin OBD2 connector, then VAG-COM can also be helpful. So, just take a look in the repair manual.

I think it's possible to do it with VAG-COM on the 2E platform.

Best regards, Rainer.

Thank you, Rainer!
Es ist schon der 16polige OBD2 Stecker. So, it works.
Does anyone know if there will be a "groundbreaking" change to the diagnostic connectors next year icon_biggrin.gif, or can I still order them without any worries?

Thank you again, and best regards.
Stefan.

You can place orders without any worries icon_wink.gif.
Systems with CAN technology are future-proof (but also somewhat more expensive).

Best regards,
Rudi

Even though the actual question has been answered, I'd like to add a brief explanation...

VAG-COM is originally based on the VAG-155x, which means that its key combinations function in the same way as those of the VAG-155x, allowing you to implement the repair manuals very accurately. However, since the VAG-155x has now been replaced by the VAS-505x, VAG-COM has also been expanded accordingly and now offers significantly enhanced functionality compared to the VAG-155x series.

Does it make sense? icon_redface.gif

Thank you all!
Now that I've also noticed that I live 3 km from the Selb/Silberbach location, icon_biggrin.gif only the turn of the year stands in the way of a purchase.

Wishing you all a happy start to the new year!
Stefan.

Hello, it's me again regarding this topic...

Unfortunately, I am unable to properly implement the steps that are only described for tester 1551 in the repair manual. icon_razz.gif Since I only have a basic understanding of the subject, I would like to know if anyone has done this before and could guide me through the process. }

Thank you very much and best regards!
Stefan.

What exactly is the problem? Is it the terminology?

Hello Sebastian,

I will document my steps using VAG-Com today.
Overall, it's as you suspect. I found a detailed description of the procedure for using the 1551 in the reporting guidelines, but I can't find it in the VAG-Com system.

Press button 1 to select "Fast Data Transfer" mode.
Press buttons 0 and 1 for the motor electronics.
Press the 0 and 4 buttons to initiate the "reset to default settings" function.
Press buttons 00 and 1 to select "Display group number 1".
5. Only proceed with the test when the display in the 4th field shows 00000000.
6. Check the ignition timing at 2000-2500 RPM.
7. Adjust the CO level according to the specifications.
8. Deviate from the default settings.

I get confused at point 4 with VAG-Com because the terms no longer seem to fit together.

But I'm going to try it again today and carefully document exactly where I get off.

Thank you very much.
Stefan.

Okay, I've never tried entering those key combinations directly into VAG-COM without looking, but if you know what you're doing, it should be possible without any problems (using the mouse!).

Terms like "measurement block" and "basic setting" always refer to the same functions.
VAG-Com is operated like a regular Windows program.

With VAG-COM, there is ONLY fast data transfer, so you can't select anything else.

For your procedure, simply select the MSG and, once the connection is established, click the "Basic Settings" button. Then, you can enter the desired channel in the first line.

Then you can proceed to point 5.

As Malte1408 already mentioned, VAG-COM does not differentiate between slow (blink code) and "fast" data transmission. Direct access to a control unit begins with the "Selection" option.

Try using the 0 and 1 keys on your keyboard and then press Q, or select the [01 - Engine Electronics] button directly.

You should be able to proceed by entering "0" and "4" on your keyboard and then pressing "Q", or by using the "[Default Settings - 04]" button.

You can also do this using the keys, by entering the number of the measurement block or display group, and then confirming with the [Start] button.

You will now see 4 fields, and the fourth field contains the value that you need to examine.

After the fourth step, there isn't much you can really do wrong anymore, but as you mentioned, it would be helpful if you could take a closer look at where things start to go wrong from that point on.

Okay!

All beginnings are difficult. icon_redface.gif
Ad group number is now called "Block".
Unfortunately, the engine always stalled whenever I switched to block 001. However, it wasn't due to operator error (as I initially thought), but simply a bad setting.

Thanks to your help and with things moving forward, the world looks much better again!

Thank you very much and best regards!!!
Stefan.
