Today, I measured the width of the timing belt on my Passat 1Z, and it came out to be 24 mm.
According to my repair manual, if the belt is wider than 22mm, it must be replaced.
Is that correct, and if so, how can the belt become wider?!?!
Or did I just misread something?
Best regards, BASTI!

I think you mean narrower, like 22mm – that's the wear limit for the timing belt.
However, I believe that's probably the point where it's definitely time to act. Gruß Bertil

I just checked the book again:
'There it literally says:'
'If the width of the timing belt exceeds 22mm, it must be replaced.'
The book is called: 'This is how it's done!'

Hi.
and if the wax candles on the Advent wreath have grown by more than 50%, you must return them to the store .
It shouldn't be taken to mean that I doubt the words of your book quote .
However, a timing belt for a TDI engine doesn't actually get wider; it only gets narrower (and only if there's something wrong with the gear geometry!). Gruß Ulf

Well, if someone also has the book 'So wird's gemacht' by H.R. Etzold, they can read about it on page 42, in the lower right corner!
I'm curious to see what happens...

Hi!
I also have the "How-to" guide for the Passat 35. It's totally awful! Some information is incorrect or missing, and there is no comparison to older generations.
Best regards, Christian.

Well, I was just wondering how a timing belt could possibly get wider...
Is there any other measurable wear limit?
Best regards, BASTI!

Hi,
Just to be on the safe side, replace this poorly designed part (tensioner pulley, idler pulley) every 60,000 km, and be sure to replace the tensioner and idler pulleys together! Check the intermediate shaft seal (I replace it every time) and, most importantly, check the axial play of the driveshaft on the VP37 ESP (wear limit 0.3 mm -> if greater, replace the bearings)!
Best regards, Christian.
