ECU Errors: Common Issues and Troubleshooting

"I'm repeatedly getting different error messages in various control units on my used Golf4 Variant (model year 2000). The most common errors appear in the engine control unit (01), ABS control unit (03), and climate control unit (0. Less frequently, I see errors in the comfort control unit (46), and so far only once in the instrument cluster and windshield wiper system (17)."

The errors are not reproducible and seem to occur every few days in different driving situations. Sometimes, I notice them because the ESP system activates. Turning the ignition off and on resolves the issue temporarily. Then, error code 00812 is stored. The error combinations are not always the same. Frequently, codes 16523, 17526, 17606, 01274, and 01297 appear.

The car generally runs without problems and doesn't appear to have been modified. The ground and positive connections are fine, the battery is new, and the alternator has been replaced. The engine control unit warning light has never come on.

Given that the errors occur irregularly and in different configurations, affecting 3-4 control units each time, I suspect these are phantom errors.

I suspect a faulty control unit/module that is sending garbage onto the bus, or a loose connection causing intermittent issues and voltage spikes.

The question is, how do you pinpoint the problem without having to replace all the components at once?

That's quite strange with all the different errors appearing in the control units...
'Did you perhaps install a radio from a third-party provider instead of the original one?'

For me, it was the phone!
During a call in an area with poor coverage, the Vg lamp blinked.
The friendly representative on site identified several (at least 4) errors in the message.
I don't have any more of those either.
Error memory cleared and OK.
So, it could very well be a brilliant device.
Just try leaving your radio, phone, or walkie-talkie turned off and see what happens.

The connector for the external radio was rewired. Pins 4 and 7 were swapped, pin 1 is now connected to "Gala," pin 3 is connected to "Diagnosis," and pin 5 is disconnected (the anti-theft feature). Power supply via phantom power has been enabled on pin 5.

Mobile phones are usually turned off.

Mistakes still happen.
