Wow,

I was quite surprised when I curiously peeked into the air filter box of my Passat yesterday.
Compared to the G3 TDI, it's a delicate masterpiece. What was particularly interesting was the "guide element" located directly in front of the filter, ensuring a uniform flow of air onto it.

G2 and G3 filters always had this "braking strip" on the dirty side, where the main flow of water entered... and that's where the dirt would accumulate.

The Passat has a very cleverly designed labyrinth before the filter, which ensures that water stays out.

The filter appeared to be only minimally (and, above all, uniformly) grayed after 14,444 km.
There was no getting rid of it, even with a beach vacation.

By the way, the spacer adhesive was also applied on the dirty side (and it was new, compared to...). G3) Once broken, likely during the improper installation of the filter.

That's interesting. Is there a picture?

These grilles were invented for the V6 TDI engine to address the issue of mass airflow sensor (MAF sensor) failures.

I'd be happy to take some photos.
I just didn't have the camera attached at the moment, and I can always remove those eight screws again.

Is 7 MP resolution enough?

Did V6 LMM failures occur due to a long ECU warm-up time and backflowing oil vapor?

"7 MP is already quite a lot. I just want to be able to recognize it." That's enough, thank you!

Oil fumes and afterburning have been A problem, but the V6, as a test platform, has had several...
According to the technical article, which likely draws on a TPL (Technical Product Literature), the snow grid of the Nordic versions was initially recommended as a solution. It will basically be the same as your maze.

Here's a photo of the distribution manifold BEFORE the filter in the 3C.

Hm,
Can you please elaborate on that with a few more sentences? Does the air come from the top? And where does it go? This grid on the upper left is open and leads into the engine compartment, towards the battery? You're welcome.

Sure, here's the translation:

"Here is the whole thing, written in a very verbose and elaborate style."

The airflow comes from (in the image, from the bottom) the front and goes into the engine compartment.

In the first chamber, a portion of the air is "skimmed off," while the rest exits through the back and bounces off the air-fuel ratio sensor. Here, water droplets sometimes pass straight through and are thus filtered out.

Then a large, curved section goes downwards and connects to the air filter housing at the bottom.

Then we'll go upstairs to the LMM.

The pipe leading to the mass airflow sensor initially connects to a box that also has something to do with air, but I don't understand why a dead space was created on the dirty side – perhaps to reduce noise.

Aha! Okay, now it's becoming clearer. And the filter sits horizontally on this grid, as you can see in the first picture, right? Hmm, it looks nice! Not much water will reach (and pass through) the filter.
