Hello!

What would theoretically be the maximum speed of a Passat 3BG with a TDI PD engine (the one with 130 hp) if it's in 6th gear? Could the highest gear of the standard transmission be used to reach the maximum permissible engine speed (4,800 RPM)?

I'm interested in this because I often hear stories about TDI engines that are capable of speeds of 240 km/h or faster. I can't imagine that.
Unfortunately, I don't have the numbers for the gear ratio readily available. Also, I also wouldn't know how to calculate the maximum speed (embarrassing).

My Passat Variant 3BG TDI with 130 horsepower and a six-speed transmission (without being chipped) and after a lot of acceleration, reaches just under 220 km/h on the speedometer. That's probably just about the actual top speed (201 km/h). At this point, the engine is already running at over 4,000 revolutions per minute.

Who knows more about this?

Regards,

delvos (Rudi)

Hi,

Are you looking here:

'...then you'll see that the 6-speed gearbox, for example, from a 150 HP engine, achieves 52.8 km/h at 1000 RPM. At your 4800 RPM, that would translate to a REAL speed of 253.44 km/h, according to...' Speedometer definitely shows 270.

Of course, that's just made up and not feasible. But you can see that 240 (at least according to the speedometer) is definitely possible. I was in my colleague's A3 the other days (130 PD 6-speed - chipped to 178 hp) ... Odometer reading: 4199, speed: 240.

Conclusion: Achieving a true ECHTE 240 is likely not possible. But the speedometer isn't a problem.
