Good evening, everyone.

The car had 86,000 kilometers (approximately 53,000 miles) on the odometer and a slow coolant leak. I had to top up the coolant, about 1/2 to 3/4 liters, every 10,000 kilometers. During the Christmas holidays, I borrowed a pressure testing kit for the cooling circuit and started looking for leaks. I applied a pressure of 1 bar, and within about 1-2 minutes, I detected a pressure loss of 0.3 bar.

Externally, there was nothing visible. It wasn't until I removed the timing belt cover that I saw droplets near the water pump.

I then replaced the timing belt, water pump, and pulleys, and everything has been fine since. Is anyone aware of any known manufacturing defects or similar issues with water pumps? The pump was actually leaking, and this happened after just under 5 years and 86,000 kilometers! I'm not familiar with this issue from my old Golf 4 (with 254,000 km on the odometer), as shown in the signature below.

Thank you all, and best regards, Holger.

It happened to my neighbor's Passat too. It's likely to be from a similar year of production.

It is reasonable to assume that this is a cluster.
Viele Grüße
Andreas

Hi!

Okay, on my Golf 4 ALH, I also replaced the timing belt, including all the parts, like the water pump.
All parts are from the friendly VW dealer, original replacement parts.

After 90,000 km and 8 years, the timing belt needed to be replaced again last year.

I hadn't noticed the coolant leak yet, but I had seen it.
that the water pump is also about to fail.
There were already visible traces of dripping.

It doesn't seem impossible, actually.
Grüße, Steffen!
