hi all,

I'm considering buying the 3BG (130PS PD, MKB unknown) from my uncle, who has leased the car for three years as a self-employed person. The agreed mileage is 150,000km, and the resale value is 21% of the new price, so not quite €6,000. I think the price is okay. Furthermore, my uncle is known as an extreme long-distance driver who usually doesn't exceed 140 km/h. So, there shouldn't be much wrong with it... or should there? What typical faults should I check for and take him to the service for a quick check-up so that it can be handled within the full service contract?

thanks and best regards,
court

(I've already vaccinated him against the usual things, no biodiesel, gentle warm-up, letting him run after full load, etc... Oh, and it's the 6-speed version, which might make a difference)

Hi mahk

The only thing that immediately comes to mind is the recall for the front axles.

As to whether the 3BG or only the 3B falls under this category, I don't know for sure - I've only ever sat in a 3B where this carriage was, and it was making a sound like an old wooden carriage.

I don't know what the f*ck it was.

As far as I know, the 3BG also falls under this. Even the A4 paper seems to have this problem.

Best regards, WarLord

Yes, Passat, A4, A6, A8 – they all have the same four-wheel drive front axle. Unfortunately, in the workshop, you only replace one component, namely the one that is prone to breaking. Most of the time, the entire front axle is a write-off (sometimes even after 40,000 km).

Isn't it a fancy VW? What could possibly go wrong with it, and then at only 150,000 km icon_question.gif icon_exclaim.gif

I would say that there are many vulnerable small parts present from the steering wheel to the hazard warning light switch. icon_wink.gif

okay, thanks to everyone. I guess checking the service manual will clear that up, right? I've never actually owned one of those manuals myself icon_redface.gif is there some kind of workshop code or something for the axle issue?

Otherwise, I'll probably just drive myself and put the specialist article "TDI buying advice" on the passenger seat. icon_wink.gif

Hey, with 6000 euros, you can't really go wrong. Some 35I's (the previous generation) are still available for this price. Even if you had to spend another 2000 euros, it would still be a bargain... Buy! Buy! icon_wink.gif

Okay, understood. icon_wink.gif

I think so too, especially because I know the history and have been pointing it out for a while, and I also always take good care of the car icon_cool.gif. It really gets serious in September 2005, but until then, a) my good old Type 89 will still be able to, and b) I'll still be able to transfer a few more euros to my savings account.
