Hi there!
Okay, a question for you all! What would the cost of a new timing belt be at a Volkswagen dealership for my car model? It's a VW Passat Variant PD with 115 horsepower, manufactured in December 1999.
I recently went to Digi-Tec in Hamburg and had a chip installed (now about 143 horsepower). The car is really fast (acceleration and torque). According to the speedometer, the top speed is sometimes 210 km/h (with 235 tires)! Would my car run even better (faster) with a new mass airflow sensor? I now have approximately 55,500 kilometers on it (chipped at 54,000 km).
I'm asking because someone with an A6 TDI 130 PS PD is supposedly getting 235 km/h according to the speedometer (which probably means there are huge speedometer inaccuracies, right?). The guy from Digi-Tec immediately said after installing the chip on a test drive we did together with my car that he would check or replace the mass airflow sensor (MAF). Would this be necessary for me? And what benefit would a K&N air filter provide in my case now?
Regards,
Tob

Hi Tob, a friend of mine has the same car with an MTH chip. His speedometer also reads 210 km/h and the engine revs to 4400 rpm because the chip limits the power. So you can assume that your mass airflow sensor (MAF) is okay. The sports air filter provides quicker turbo response below 2000 rpm, and the maximum speed is reached a bit faster. However, there are many disadvantages. When driving in the rain, the filter gets soaking wet, which eventually leads to the filter oil being washed out, resulting in poor air filtration. Also, the filter oil dries up relatively quickly, so you need to verschandeln and re-oil it about every 3 months (based on my own experience). I would avoid using the filter; it's safer. It's better to sacrifice a little bit of power at higher RPMs, as your maximum speed isn't increasing anyway since you're already hitting the rev limiter. If you want more top speed, you need an extra gear, but conversion kits for a 6-speed transmission are expensive.

Hi.
Did the person from Digitec also tell you why they would check/replace the mass airflow sensor?
Generally speaking, there is no reason to take such actions as long as the engine is delivering normal performance.
Did you experience a loss of power compared to before the tuning? Gruß Ulf

Hello Ulf,
'I couldn't detect any loss of power before the tuning! I also don't think the mass airflow sensor (MAF) is defective! He probably just said that because those things generally cause problems in VW vehicles!'
