Hello,
Will the *VAG-COM/OBD2 Diagnostic Professional System KKL+CAN (USB)* help me with the vehicle mentioned above? If I buy it and try to figure it out?
It's starting to get on my nerves having to always take my car to BMW and watch them read data from it (adjust things?), etc. The other day, someone said the turbocharger would probably fail soon. They would have seen that in the diagnostic analysis on the computer.
I understand that VCDS is primarily software for VAG vehicles. However, the OBD2 component of it is a more universal thing, right? I'm just not sure if it will ultimately be helpful for my BMW.
Thank you all!
Best regards,

Hello,
Theoretically, you could use VCDS to access the engine control unit via OBD2, but unfortunately, it's highly likely that your model doesn't support OBD2 yet. OBD2 became mandatory for diesel vehicles in the EU starting in 2003, and for gasoline vehicles as early as 2000.
Quote: | What is the difference between generic OBD2 and manufacturer-specific OBD (for VAG vehicles)?
Generic OBD2 devices work with all vehicles that are OBD2 compatible. They allow access to and modification of all emission-related information and settings within the vehicle's engine control unit (ECU).
The manufacturer-specific OBD protocol (for Audi, Seat, VW, and Skoda) goes much further: it allows access to all control units installed in the vehicle. For example, you can check ABS sensors, activate the cruise control, program new vehicle keys, change the configuration settings of the central locking system, or check the injection timing on TDI engines.

Of course, there are also corresponding diagnostic systems for BMW. Unfortunately, for example, a device from Launch is priced about 10 times higher than VCDS. -> This is certainly useful for workshops, but probably not for private individuals.
Best regards, Rainer.

Okay, thanks for the straightforward answer! So, it won't be much use for the BMW, and the CAN-USB interface will be sufficient.
I'm a bit lost.
PS: One key is missing, everything is perfectly legal. If necessary, we'll have to get it done by VW. It would be nicer, though, if we could do it ourselves with VCDS.
"Thank you very much!"
Best regards,
