Hello,
I often get annoyed by the generally high prices of replacement parts, so I always buy headlight bulbs from the cheapest possible sources as generic ("no-name") parts (like Unitec, Alpine, etc.), for example, at hardware stores.
"Now it seems that our Ibiza 6K wears out these cheap bulbs a bit faster than the parts originally installed by the factory (my Polo still has the original bulbs)."
Does anyone here happen to know anything about the different qualities and artificially inflated lifespan ratings of branded versus generic light bulbs?
"I have occasionally read online (please don't ask me for links) that voltage spikes from the vehicle's electrical system can significantly reduce the lifespan of light bulbs. Therefore, poorly designed wiring harnesses could contribute to premature lamp failure."
If that's really true, I could build RF filters using materials from my electronics junk box so that the light bulbs would receive mostly "clean" power (with minimal voltage loss due to filtering).
Would that be a conceivable solution to extend the lifespan of the light bulbs? Gruß Ulf

Your statement about voltage spikes is also correct. H7 bulbs are particularly sensitive to them. Unfortunately, the high light output also has its drawbacks. If a bulb fails due to voltage spikes, the filament should be visibly burned out.

That sounds more like "broken" or "damaged." The lamps likely failed due to vibrations.

Hello,
I'm also not familiar with the burn times, but in almost all tests, these generic brands showed significantly higher manufacturing tolerances. This manifested itself in unacceptably high glare values, and mechanically, the fins were sometimes installed at such skewed angles that, in my opinion, proper heat dissipation was impossible, as was the designed strength against vibrations. Once again, "you get what you pay for" applies here.
My recommendation for good durability with headlight designs that are compatible with oncoming traffic is to choose premium lamps from reputable brands like Osram or Philips. These consistently demonstrate very good light output while maintaining maximum lifespan. While the common "+30%" or "+50%" lamps improve light output, they also tend to reduce their service life somewhat. According to the manufacturers, the higher light output in these cases is partly due to a more precisely manufactured filament.
Osram Night @ Day lamps, designed for continuous headlights, offer a longer lifespan but have slightly lower light output compared to standard lamps.
Currently, I'm using Osram Silverstar bulbs as H7 replacements, which provide significantly more light on the road compared to the standard ones. In the past 2.5 years, I've only experienced one failure.

I would place this in the realm of esotericism, because whatever form these "peaks" take, they must carry a significant amount of energy to have any noticeable effect. The light bulbs, as powerful consumers, would need to reliably short-circuit such interactions so that they cannot become effective from an energetic perspective.
As classic cold solder joints, the lamps are particularly vulnerable when switched on, especially if the alternator attempts to quickly recharge the battery after a cold start and completion of the preheating process by increasing the voltage. Also common are bumpy roads, sports suspensions, and accidentally leaving the hood open with the lights on.
However, a high-quality brand lamp handles this situation somewhat better and still costs only slightly more than the cheap, low-quality products. You just shouldn't buy it from an authorized dealer.
Here you can see a hot break and a cold break (both from my H7 production line).

In your Polo, as with other VW models, the so-called body control module (BCM) was introduced. Its main function is to control the exterior lighting using power transistors, rather than directly switching voltage via the light switch or relays.
I only know for the Audi A4 (B6/7) that the voltage at the lamps is a maximum of 12.8 V. If the on-board voltage is higher, the lamps are dimmed using PWM (Pulse Width Modulation). This also applies to DC systems. I believe it's the same for Polo and Golf as well.
At Volkswagen/Audi, so-called 'LongLife' bulbs are used, which are designed for maximum lifespan.
Normally, the lamps should last significantly longer than they used to, provided they are not damaged.

In the Polo, the corresponding area looks like plastic, but the "front fascia" (which houses the radiator and provides mounting points for front spoilers and lights) is at least partially made of a composite material: plastic on the outside, with metal profiles inside. This inevitably becomes an issue when trying to create space for the Ibiza Cupra FMIC (Front Mount Intercooler).
Another idea:
If vibrations are damaging the bulbs, one should be able to mitigate this with "dampening" masses, for example, by attaching lead strips to the outside of the roof rack above the reflectors, or even self-adhesive anti-vibration mats – provided that the material and adhesive can withstand the temperatures  .

Brightness-enhanced H7 bulbs can be identified by their relatively compact filament, which is also made of what appears to be very thin wire. The cheaper ones usually have a noticeably thicker filament that is also longer in terms of dimensions. When measuring their power consumption using a stabilized 13.8 V power supply, they often draw more power than the standard bulbs. Based on calculations, I consistently measured at least 60 W for H7 bulbs with the thicker filament, and most were close to 65 W. However, since the brightness was noticeably lower compared to the Philips Premium bulbs, more of the electricity must be converted into heat.  On the other hand, the thicker filament is likely less susceptible to damage from voltage spikes.
Looking at the manufacturer's website, for example Philips, H7 bulbs are typically rated for around 300 operating hours. For someone who commutes with one hour of driving each way and perhaps makes a few private trips, a "always-on" driver would likely get about three quarters of a year out of them. This aligns with our observations!
Good maintenance is likely to extend the lifespan of components! Therefore, it's essential to avoid letting the hood slam shut while the interior light is on. The same applies to the license plate lights if the license plate is located in the tailgate. I recommend replacing W5W (5 watt) bulbs with, for example, W3W (3 watt) bulbs. It's also important to ensure that the lamps have a central support for the filament, as this makes them less susceptible to vibrations. The W3W bulbs are only slightly darker than the W5W bulbs, and the latter don't stay bright for very long after being new. The interesting thing is that you don't pay more for bulbs with a central filament support or for the 3 watt version compared to standard Philips or Osram bulbs without these features, and those standard bulbs in my cars haven't lasted particularly long anyway.
Currently, I am very satisfied with the Philips H7 All Weather bulbs that I managed to buy at a reasonable price. There's nothing better for the fog lights (which use H1 bulbs in my 206), and I've always liked using them for the low beam as well! They are completely pleasant to drive with, glare-free even in snow or rain, unlike the Peugeot headlights which tend to scatter a lot of light upwards. Unfortunately, they are hardly available anywhere at reasonable prices anymore, even though several manufacturers still have them in their range. If anyone knows a source for these All Weather bulbs that doesn't charge three times the price of "normal" bulbs, please let me know! Nice idea, it might work. However, the question is what happens at higher temperatures. You might end up damaging the lamps due to insufficient cooling and overheating. This certainly wouldn't be a problem in winter. Aluminum sheet metal would probably be the least "harmful" option, as it can dissipate heat itself.
I once used duct tape to secure the upper inner headlight bracket to the fender mounting on a colleague's car. This also minimized lamp wear.
It's a real pain to do, and every time you have to change a light bulb, it becomes an ordeal (which it already is without that). Gruß Bertil

I just took another look from the back: the parts supporting the radiator are also profile sheets connected (welded) to the upper crossmember. At the very least, the lamp reflector helps to dissipate excess heat from the entire headlight system. You should keep that in mind.
Wie viel das ist kann ich nicht sagen. Ob die Wärme direkt aus dem Lampenhalter oder aber per Strahlungswärme aus der Glühlampe selber an den Reflektor gerät, dürfte egal sein. BeidIt is possible.
With plastic reflectors, you might even get into trouble doing that; they could even break.

1) Suppression of voltage spikes.

If it's not a halogen lamp, then that statement is correct. Unfortunately, the H7 bulb is a halogen lamp. Each time it's switched on, the "halogen effect" needs to be initiated. During this period, the halogen lamp experiences greater "wear."
