Hello,

Is there a guide available online for 10c tuning? I keep reading about it, but I don't really know where to start. I know that you need to add a resistor with a specific resistance, but you have to figure out the correct value through trial and error. But how and where exactly do you do that?
Can I get some of those from Conrad? icon_question.gif
Can it damage the engine?
Passat 35i 1Z with approximately 200,000 kilometers.

Hi David!

Check this out:
http://www.geocities.com/ublatz/TDI-Probleme.htm#_Toc534160963
or in the archived posts from before April 15, 2002.

Simply install a potentiometer (1 kΩ) and make the entire setup switchable on/off using a switch.
If used correctly, nothing should go wrong.

I did it the same way, and it works great.
My car has now clocked 160,000 kilometers.

Regards,

Andreas.

Hi Andreas,

Thank you for the response.
So, if I understand correctly, you only activate the tuning feature when you need it?
Are there any disadvantages to this? I can imagine that the consumption might increase.

David.

The 10-cent tuning is switched on via a switch because the engine's electronics perform a sensor test in the first few seconds after the ignition is turned on. If the 'tuning' is constantly 'on,' the electronics would detect this. The signal would be 'implausible,' and the engine would only run in emergency mode, with the preheating indicator flashing. However, this only happens as long as the 'tuning' is active. If the self-test is complete and you then switch on the 'tuning,' the electronics are likely more tolerant and should not display any errors.
That's what I've gathered, at least, from the descriptions provided by other people who work on cars. icon_lol.gif

Best, Björn.

Hello,

That all sounds very interesting; I think I'll try it out on my AFN as well.
I'm just wondering if the subjective feeling of improvement with a 10c tuning is real. Do you actually notice the extra power, or is it just a feeling that the car is performing better than ever?

best regards
Ronny.

Sure, here is the translation of the text from German to English:

'Mon!'

Well explained, Björn!

Regarding the subjective perception of tuning:
My stopped acceleration times improved by...
Approximately 3 seconds, across all disciplines (minimum of 3 measurements).
'With '10 Cent' and without the tuning.'
So, the increased performance is definitely noticeable!

Regarding increased consumption: I cannot assess this, as I...
I only occasionally activate my 'power switch.'
But I think performance comes from power, which equals fuel.
I'm happy to accept the increased fuel consumption, as in my opinion, there's no tuning that's more cost-effective and effective than this.
But of course, that's just my opinion!

Regards,

Andreas.

thank you, Andreas icon_biggrin.gif

And what about the wear and tear on the engine with a 10-cent tuning modification? I'm planning to build and test something similar myself soon.
I'm a little afraid of what I might break with it.

Actually, the increased fuel consumption doesn't bother me much in this context. After all, you can always switch the tuning off with the switch.

Best, Björn.

Hi Björn!

Unfortunately, I can't tell you anything about wear and tear - my motto is:
'Dare to leave gaps,' I'm not a mechanic myself (in the traditional sense).
Just occasional oil changes, brake pad replacements, etc.

Sorry and greetings.

Andreas.

Hi.

Every motor, by its nature, wears out faster under full load than under partial load.
When the engine is running at its maximum potential ("tuned"), wear and tear will naturally be accelerated, as long as you're utilizing that extra power. And the more extra power you're using, the more pronounced this effect will be.

(amazing insights, right? icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif)

If the engine eventually starts producing excessive black smoke, similar to a Russian diesel locomotive, then piston seizing or melting damage may soon occur, and its lifespan may be reduced to only a few percent or even a fraction of a percent of its normal value.

Based on these considerations, my powerbox is usually turned off. It is activated only for occasional, more demanding acceleration bursts, especially short acceleration sections, but I never use the extra power constantly, for example, to increase the top speed.

Based on the experiences of other drivers who have tuned their TDIs, this might seem overly cautious, but I want to minimize the impact of the tuning on the lifespan of my engine – while still having those extra 20 horsepower icon_smile.gif readily available "just in case."

Hello Ulf,

I think so too. I'm also more of a cautious person.
I'm just wondering now if what you're doing with the power box can be applied to my 10c tuning.
I would like to install the resistor/spindle trimmer and, as you mentioned, use it sparingly.
How can one proceed most carefully in this situation? Am I correct in assuming that things are still relatively okay if the car isn't producing excessive amounts of black smoke, or can that not be used as an indicator?
I also wonder if it's even possible to simply switch modes while driving. So many questions...

best regards
Ronny.

Hi Ronny,
The difference between 10ct and Powerbox devices is 1. the price, and 2. the fact that the devices activate the 'tuning' with a 5-second delay (the simplest variant) or depending on the mass airflow sensor (MAF) value / boost pressure (slightly better devices).
Setting:
Reduce the resistance until it starts to smoke, then turn it back 1-2 clicks.
Alternative option (or additional verification):
'Perform an Ulf-Test' and compare the results. If you become more than 20% faster without producing any soot, I would also consider reducing the setting further.
Switching gears while driving is possible without any problems (I wouldn't necessarily do it when the accelerator is fully pressed, though, because it causes a noticeable jolt icon_twisted.gif).

Post16-05-2002, 13:58    Subject: We did it! Quote

Hello,

We quickly installed and tested the '10c tuning' during our lunch break today.

I desoldered the potentiometers and switches from cheap active speakers for a PC, attached wires to them, and connected them to the ESP's connector.

Result:

Acceleration from 60 to 100 km/h in 4th gear, on a flat surface:
previously 9 seconds, now 6 seconds.
The increased performance is noticeably better.

Thank you again for all the valuable tips.

Greetings.
David.

Hi,
With a 30% increase, you're looking at approximately 120 horsepower.
The power output values for 'professional' custom-built engine kits for the 1Z engine are all within a range of up to approximately 110 horsepower.
If you plan to drive the car for a longer period, I wouldn't leave that setting enabled (even if there's no visible black smoke).

Hello Rudi,

During the test earlier, the engine was also shaking even at idle, so the potentiometer was turned back further.

Furthermore, the tuning shouldn't be active all the time, but only activated briefly when needed (e.g., for overtaking).
Is that okay then?

Hello,

First of all, thank you for the information. I'll go ahead and try to figure something out.
Eine Frage hab ich aber noch, hab ich das jetzt richtig verstanden das das Poti auf die beiden Leitungen geschaltet wird ohne eine Leitung zu trennen? So, in parallel?

best regards
Ronny.

Hi.

"Between cable 2 and cable 3, 'parallel to the pump' is correct."

By the way, there's also the option of using two antiparallel diodes (e.g., 1N4148) in series with the (smaller) resistor, and then connecting the whole thing between pin 2 and 3.
This results in fewer/no idle problems and, based on experience, provides more power at higher RPMs, which chip tuners believe TDIs handle better than an insane torque peak around 2000 RPM.
I don't know why it works that way with the diodes icon_rolleyes.gif.
