Hello,
I'm starting to get really frustrated. My power steering pump is making a loud squealing noise. In other posts here, I've seen that this can be caused by air in the system. I've already jacked up the car and turned the steering wheel from lock to lock about 10 times. Then I started and stopped the engine several times until the oil level stabilized. But it's all been for nothing, the noise won't go away. Does anyone know of a trick that might help?
Best regards,

Hi,
Is the serpentine belt of the power steering pump properly tensioned?
Best, Andy.

It's also possible that the serpentine belt driving the power steering pump is slipping on the surface of the pulleys due to normal wear and tear, which can cause similar noises.

The belt is new, and the car has only 50,000 km on it, so I'm less likely to suspect wear and tear. The timing belt is automatically tensioned by an oil damper, and I believe the tension is okay.

Hello!
Well, there can't be that many possibilities left. It could be that a bearing in the pump is failing, or, as I suspect, that the pressure relief valve, which is supposed to release excess pressure when fully engaged, is stuck open or sometimes opens, and the oil flowing through it is causing the noise. But as I said, that's just a guess.

Okay... I'm going to replace the pump now. Let's see if that fixes the problem.

A few sprays of oil/grease from the spray can helped me!
Sounds like new again .
(It wasn't just the servo that was squeaking, but also the other pulleys.)
Best regards,
KFH
