Here's an older article from the "Motortechnische Zeitschrift" that very interestingly describes the development steps leading to the 1.9-liter TDI engine with VP:
For example, it describes (so that the search function can find - Construction data 1.9 TDI, - Engine Management EDC, Engine Control Unit; - Spritz start control, with charge pressure control and height adjustment; - Combustion chamber optimization, design of piston groove and swirler channel; - Interpretation of the crank housing, crank shaft, bevel gear mounting, vibration damper; - Explanation of the timing belt drive; - Emission characteristics. A topic frequently discussed in the forum is the loosely mounted KW (suspension strut) mounting (loosening of the KW central screw and the KW strut extending). In this article, you will find the reason for the chosen construction method - this way, the KW cap for the TDI engine has been made durable.
