Alternative ignition coils for the 2.0 TFSI engine?

Hello,

In tuning forums for 2.0 TFSI engines, there are sometimes discussions about the stock spark plugs being weak.
Occasionally, red series ignition coils for engines with 6 cylinders or more are mentioned as a solution, and they are supposedly designed to be easily swapped in as a direct replacement.
Images of both coils (black housing: 07K905715F or NGK U5015, red coil: 06E905115E or...). NGK U5014) For example, on automotive parts websites, you can find completely identical housings.
https://www.ngk.de/de/produktfinder/produktfinder/////U5015//
https://www.ngk.de/de/produktfinder/produktfinder/////U5014//

According to the NGK list, the black spark plugs with part numbers 07K905715F or NGK U5015 are primarily used in engines with displacements of 1.8 to 2.5 liters, while the red spark plugs with part numbers 06E905115E are... NGK U5014 spark plugs are primarily used in engines with 6 to 10 cylinders.

Both coils combine the primary winding, switching stage, and secondary winding in their compact housings. In order for the coils to deliver a large amount of ignition energy without overheating, the data, especially for the primary circuit and the MSG software (e.g., closing time control), must be carefully matched.

Unfortunately, I could only find English-language pages for technical comparisons of the two coils.

Main point: Comparison of resistance values of the secondary windings.
Standard spools = 3.3 MΩ.
5-cylinder coils = 4.75 MΩ
R8 coils (likely the red ones) = 5.31 MΩ.
Okadas (special tuning coils) = 6.2 MΩ
(The primary windings are not easily measured because the switching stage is connected in series with the winding.)

Main point:
With black coils, misfires begin at much lower speeds compared to the red coils, and the sparks produced by the red coils are also visibly brighter and more intense.

Question:
Does anyone know if the 07K905715F and 06E905115E coils are truly interchangeable without any risk of malfunction (i.e., are the primary side characteristics similar enough)? And why are the red coils supposedly better in the 2.0 TFSI engines, but the engines are still equipped with black coils from the factory? The prices, according to the parts catalog, are the same.
Gruß Ulf

Hello Ulf,

I have red ignition coils on my Audi A4 with a 2.0 TFSI engine, and I can't say that they've caused any problems. My previous owner had them installed. He told me back then that there was a recall for the black ones, and then they were replaced with red ones.

Technically, it seems to be working. Unfortunately, I can't contribute any more than this.

Andreas.

"On my new TFSI (3. " Interestingly, engines with indirect injection (Gen with port injection) use different ignition coils. The modules at the top, where the electronics are encased, are noticeably larger. Additionally, each ignition coil now has its own ground cable that is screwed to the valve cover.

Apparently, there was still a need for action in that area.
