Smart Fortwo: Gear won't shift from Neutral to Drive (Solution)

Vehicle: Smart Fortwo, series 451.

Problem description: The engine starts normally and runs in idle. However, even with the brake pedal depressed, it is not possible to shift from "N" (neutral) to "1" (first gear).

Noticeable: When attempting to start the vehicle, the "N" indicator briefly disappears and then reappears. The vehicle itself does not trigger a MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp).

Important: In principle, you should only engage "1" while keeping your foot on the brake pedal. Depending on the software and year of manufacture, it may be sufficient to simply tap the pedal once. If in doubt, keep your foot pressed down.

Checkpoint: Test the brake light switch function, possibly with an assistant. If it is defective, this could already be the cause of the problem.

However, if it still doesn't work, then replacing the battery is worthwhile, especially for an older one. Even though the battery could still start the engine properly, its reduced capacity was no longer sufficient to power the actuators for the clutch and transmission.

Swapped out, now it runs again! If the radio code cannot be found, a direct replacement is recommended. Before purchasing a battery, measure the space in the battery compartment as it is limited. The battery is located in the floor area in front of the passenger seat.
