Hi,
It's about repairing scratches in the plastic bumpers.
What should you use to prime before touching up with a paint pen or spray paint (i.e., not a full paint job)?

Depending on the severity of the damage, I would use filler.

Sure, here's the translation:

"This is about plastic as a substrate, not metal."

For example, something like this:
https://autolackierbedarf.de/spraydosen/fuellen-und-grundieren/294/mipa-rapidfiller-spray-400-ml

Suitable for use on plastic surfaces as well.

Hi,
First of all, thank you for your effort. I can find the type of product you're looking for, but if you read the descriptions carefully on the retailer's website (in the link) and on the manufacturer's website:
Quote:
Adheres to iron, steel, zinc and, with appropriate pretreatment, to aluminum, as well as to surfaces that can be overcoated.
in the usual plastics used in the passenger car sector

Quote:
Do not process on thermoplastic substrates

I assume that the bumpers, in particular, are made of thermoplastic material. I can soften and reshape them by heating them with a hot air gun. That's how I get rid of the bumps.

Having sought advice and experience, I intentionally asked the question here. At the dealer, at best, you'll get excerpts from the datasheet read to you, along with a glowing description of the products in their portfolio.

Hello Herbert,
Last year, I repaired the bumper of my daughter-in-law's Polo. I used regular body filler. The result was very good, and the condition remains unchanged to this day.

Regards,
Jörg.

Hi Jörg,
Are we talking about standard spray fillers, like the ones used for car bodywork?

Hello Herbert,

Yes, just regular spray paint from a can. I used it like that on a Fiesta a few years ago. And even there, there were no problems, until the vehicle reached the end of its lifespan. icon_smile_thumb_up.gif

I'm currently at work. When I get home, I can check to see if I still have the fountain pen (cartridge/ink). Then I could give you more information.

Regards,
Jörg.

"Filler is designed for the finest imperfections and sanding scratches." To fill scratches in plastic parts, you need plastic filler.

I would like to take a look at the following:
https://innotec.info/produkte/reparaturprodukte/repaplast-finish/
and afterwards, or, if only an adhesive primer is needed:
https://innotec.info/produkte/lacke-rostschutz-grundierung/repaplast-primer-new-formula/

I haven't personally tried it yet, but I recently came across another forum where the products were recommended.

I assume that filler was used previously if the scratches are somewhat deeper. In the described Polo, there was a hole in the bumper. I would have needed a *lot* of filler icon_wink.gif.

"For small touch-ups with a paint pen, thorough degreasing is usually sufficient... or do you use a brush for larger areas?"

Here's how we do it when we're painting:

1. Thoroughly degrease.
2. Sand very smoothly, using 400-grit sandpaper, or even finer grit if sanding by hand.
3. Apply a plastic primer (available as a spray can) otherwise it might peel off.
4. Filling and sanding.
5. Paint...

When using filler from a can, it's important to sand it down very finely, and it's best to do so when it's still wet.
