Just now, I briefly removed the right valve cover, but there was nothing obvious to see. I don't have the time or energy right now to work on the left side.

Does the air leak from the crankshaft oil drain (crack/hole in the piston) or from the intake tract (slider/valve actuation in the bucket, which keeps the valve open or the intake valve plate broken at the edge)?
In a 2.5 TDI V6 engine, a completely leaking fuel injector can cause air and combustion gases to be blown into the cylinder head cover.
The owner (son of my friend) removed the valve cover on the driver's side on Friday, and two rocker arms broke off from the cylinder, lying as pieces inside the cylinder head.
Likely, a valve is not closing properly, which then causes the exhaust gases to be pushed into the intake.
Basically, a complete used engine is actually available, but it's still installed in a slaughterhouse, which would then have to be completely dismantled and disposed of, but I don't have the time for that.
He acquired two used cylinder heads for a small price during the week, along with intact camshafts, and then his engine's first major overhaul begins. The engine block is in good condition (no pressure leaks into the crankshaft housing), and then the "new" cylinder head is installed after inspection and cleaning.
Currently, he has to drive a Corsa C that was given to him and which he then replaced with a new one.

Continued, cylinder head removed, engine block in good condition, used cylinder head with also worn camshafts acquired for free and installed, put into operation today.
Next week, an oil change, then he can decide whether to sell the car, keep driving until it breaks down, or spend between 1000 and 1200 euros just on parts for a proper repair using at least high-quality parts from the manufacturer.
By the way, the Corsa actually died last Sunday at 137,000 km due to a jumped-over timing chain.
