For vehicles with the LT (Type 2D), the engine control unit and immobilizer should be Volkswagen components, while all other control units should be Mercedes-Benz components.

Accessing the two control units should not be a problem, provided that the wiring and control units are in good condition.

This could allow us to query the two control units about their operational status and any malfunctions they may have experienced.

Does the vehicle run? If the immobilizer is completely defective, it shouldn't be able to start (and should immediately shut off after an attempted start), unless it has been disabled in the engine control unit.
